After Khizr and Ghazala Khan stood in front of the country at the Democratic National Convention, telling the story of their son’s death while fighting for our country, Trump responded in an even more deplorable fashion than I think we ever imagined. Instead of providing any words of comfort or compassion, he attacked the parents and went as far as suggesting that Ghazala Khan was not permitted to speak by her husband. Of course, that was not the reason this mother who lost her son remained silent. John Oliver reminded us all of her reason, saying,
Ok. For a start, his wife has explained that she chose not to speak because she gets too upset when she sees images of her dead son’s face, you fucking asshole.”
He then blasted Trump on the notion that successes are somehow sacrifices. When interviewed by George Stephanopoulos regarding Khizr Khan’s claim that Trump had not made sacrifices for anyone, the Republican nominee was asked about the sacrifices he has made for the country. His reply was a convoluted laundry list of self-described successes that he claims were sacrifices. John Oliver corrected this thought and said exactly what it is.
No, no they are absolutely not. They are self-serving half-truths from a self-serving half man who is somehow convinced half the country that sacrifice is the same thing as success. Honestly, the main takeaway from these two weeks is that incredibly we may be on the brink of electing such a damaged, sociopathic narcissist that the simple presidential duty of comforting the families of fallen soldiers may actually be beyond his capabilities. And, I genuinely did not think that was a part of the job someone could be bad at.”
If that doesn’t motivate your Republican friends to turn their backs on Donald Trump, I just don’t know what will.
