What started out as a respectful, calm interview between Newsmax’s Steve Malzberg and Republican Senator Mike Lee quickly went South and almost went off the rails after Malzberg wouldn’t stop pressing Lee about why he wasn’t endorsing his party’s hideous racist, misogynistic presidential candidate. The result was Lee going off on an epic rant about how ill-suited Donald Trump is to lead a country – and it’s definitely worth listening to.
After Malzberg continuously badgered Lee on why he wasn’t voting for Trump, arguing that having presumptive Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton in the White House is more dangerous to the U.S. Constitution than voting for a complete and utter moron, Lee interrupted and said in a frustrated voice, “Hey look, Steve, I get it. You want me to endorse Trump.”
Malzberg was straightforward and replied, “I don’t understand why you’re not, really.”
That was seriously all Lee needed. Because he’s probably been asked that particular question dozens of times from idiots within his own party, it took nothing for Lee to go into a full-blown rant against The Donald, explaining exactly why he would never vote for Trump. Lee said:
We can get into that if you want. We can get into the fact that he accused my best friend’s father of conspiring to kill JFK. We can go through the fact that he’s made some statements that some have identified correctly as religiously intolerant. We can get into the fact that he’s wildly unpopular in my state, in part because my state consists of people who are members of a religious minority church — a people who were ordered exterminated by the governor of Missouri in 1838 — and, statements like that make them nervous.
Lee did say that he might reconsider “…if I heard the right things… But don’t sit here and tell me, Steve, that I have no reason to be concerned about Donald Trump,” however it was clear that Lee wasn’t going to hold his breath.
Malzberg tried to defend Trump and asked Lee if he was only opposing Trump for his own personal reasons, which was a reference to Trump’s accusation that Ted Cruz’s father had been involved in the assassination of President John F. Kennedy and the business mogul’s horrendous Muslim ban. Lee was almost left speechless at the stupidity of the question. Lee fired back and reminded Malzberg that, “He said that! He actually said that. He said that without any scintilla, without a scintilla of evidence. Now that concerns me.”
I’d like some assurances that he’s going to be a vigorous defender for the U.S. Constitution. That he’s not going to be an autocrat, that he’s not going to be an authoritarian, that he’s not somebody whose going to abuse a document to which I’ve sworn an oath to uphold and protect and defend. I’m sorry, sir, but that is not an unreasonable demand.
It’s great to see that some Republicans are actually using their brains and encouraging their fellow GOPers to do the same. You can watch the full interview below:
