Sen. Bernie Sanders went off on Mitch McConnell and other Senate Republican stooges over the pointless waste of time that is repealing Obamacare.
Hardly a day after being in the hospital for a medical procedure, Bernie was back to the Senate floor without missing a single beat. He shamed Republicans for over 50 pointless votes to take away the ability to see a doctor from about 17 million Americans, saying:
I think everybody here in the Senate understands this, the bill we are debating today is a complete waste of time. This is just another reason why the American people have so little respect for the Congress.
There are major crises facing our country and the Republican leadership once again is attempting to repeal Obamacare. I kind of lost track about how many times this effort has been made. I think in the House it was over fifty. I don’t know how many it is here in the Senate.
Republicans really are irrationally preoccupied by the fantasy of repealing Obamacare. What is exceptionally stupid about it, is that they know they will never get it to happen. Senate majority leader Mitch McConnell was quoted as saying “Obviously, we’re not anticipating a presidential signature, but I think the president should have to take credit for this for the debacle that this legislation has created.” Is it any wonder regular Americans hold Congress in utter contempt with statements like this? Not only is he knowingly wasting time, but he is saying he will let Obama “take credit” for Obamacare. Is Mitch stupid? Obama has been bragging up the unmitigated success of his law for years.
However, Sanders was not finished in delivering the blunt truth to his Republican opponents:
So let me break the news to my Republican colleagues, although I am sure that they already got the news. And that is Obama is not going to sign a bill repealing Obamacare. I think that is not likely to happen, and what we are doing today is just a waste of time.
The last thing we need is a budget reconciliation bill that throws 17 million Americans off of health insurance and denies nearly 3 million women the health care they need by defunding Planned Parenthood.
The reason why the American people are angry and the reason why the Congress is so unpopular is that the Congress is not addressing the real problems that are impacting their lives each and every day. At a time when the rich are getting richer, poverty is increasing, and the middle class has been in a 40-year decline, we need a budget that improves the lives of all Americans, not just the people on the top.
President Obama is never going to sign off on a repeal of the greatest achievement of his presidency. Republicans know this. Why the hell do they keep doing it? Then to make it worse, they have the nerve to blame Democrats for “nothing getting done” in Washington.
Without Obamacare, millions would be living in fear of getting seriously ill every day. Families would go bankrupt. And tens of thousands would die every year due to a lack of affordable access to healthcare. Thank God we have Bernie watching our backs.
