Trump and his insane Twitter tantrums have been the subject of much discussion over the past couple of days — it’s hard to get away from it after he’s been at it for going on around 48 hours, and on Tuesday’s episode of Conan, Bernie Sanders broke it all down for us. I wish I could say that his explanation was comforting. It’s not.
Senator Sanders took the tweets and explained them one at a time, starting with Trump’s rant about illegal voters.
First of all, it’s delusional, it’s totally insane. Nobody believes that who studies elections or election patterns.”
“When he says that, he’s really sending a signal to Republicans all over this country, Republican leaders, and what he’s saying is: ‘We have got to suppress the vote, we have got to make it harder for poor people, people of color, immigrants, elderly people, to participate because they may be voting against us. And that’s scary stuff.”
Conan then asked Bernie about Trump’s tweet suggesting extreme punishment or deportation for people who burn the American flag in protest. Bernie, visibly annoyed with the audacity of that statement, listed all of the things that Trump should really be focusing on — you know, stuff like massive income and wealth inequality, poverty, climate change… just to name a few. He then laid out what he suspects was the real message behind this tweet:
Be careful if you are prepared to dissent. What he is really saying is, ‘If you really want to dissent, be careful. It’s not just the American flag here, we’re watching you.’ That’s what’s scary about that.”
