When Honest Joe says he supports marriage equality, he doesn’t mean he gives his tacit approval to the idea of same-sex marriage, he means he’ll gay marry you in his god damned house.
Monday, Vice President Biden officiated a wedding between White House staffers Brian Mosteller and Joe Mahshie in his Washington D.C. home. It was the first time the VP had officiated a wedding ceremony and he obtained a temporary license to do so. It was a small ceremony attended by family members.
Biden tweeted out this picture of himself with the two happy grooms:
Proud to marry Brian and Joe at my house. Couldn't be happier, two longtime White House staffers, two great guys. pic.twitter.com/0om1PT7bKh

True to form, conservative heads exploded with rage and piled on to admonish Biden for violating his Catholic upbringing:

@VP So, you just pick & choose which Church teachings you follow? Are you a Catholic or a Bidenist?

@VP Which Catholic bakery did you force to make the cake at?

@VP you're completely ignoring the teaching of your church: both by performing a non sacramental marriage and a gay marriage.

But screw the haters. There were far more supportive well-wishers and this is all we have to say about the sticks in the mud:

Marriage equality has come a long way. Biden wasn’t always a public supporter of the idea. As recently as 2008, Biden said in a debate with Sarah Palin, who was the Republican Vice Presidential nominee at the time, that both were against same-sex marriage. Although in that same debate Biden did support giving same-sex couples equal rights as heterosexual married couples such as hospital visitation, property rights, etc.
In 2012, Biden “accidentally” gave his support for marriage equality, for which he was admonished by everyone but the President, who still hadn’t come out in full support of the issue.
Biden said after showing his support for gay marriage, despite the uproar, the President was pleased with him:
I got blowback from everybody but the president. I walked in that Monday, he had a big grin on his face, he put his arms around me and said, ‘Well, Joe, God love you, you say what you think.’ I knew he agreed with me. It wasn’t like he was in a different place.”
At the time of publication, the Tweet had 55,000 likes and about 17,000 retweets, showing the country has come a long way too.
It’s crazy to think just four years ago, the Democratic president couldn’t support the idea of marriage equality publicly and doing so was thought to be political suicide. Now, the Vice President, the second most powerful man in the country is literally marrying two men in his living room.
What a great country we live in.
