Earlier today, Donald Trump once again proved that he isn’t ready to act as POTUS and is clinging to his old petty arguments as people in Puerto Rico are dying and the country is mourning another consequence of our relaxed gun laws.
This morning, Trump raised eyebrows when he tweeted that the Senate Intelligence Committee should actually be investigating the free press, implying that the “Fake News” is more guilty than he is.
Why Isn’t the Senate Intel Committee looking into the Fake News Networks in OUR country to see why so much of our news is just made up-FAKE!”
What that looks like is Trump once again attacking First Amendment rights and punishing the media for doing its job. For the President of the United States to suggest that the government should investigate networks for simply reporting unflattering (but true) information about him is terrifying, and shows that Trump wants to be a dictator more than anything in the world. Sorry Trump, but negative coverage doesn’t translate to “fake”.
During a press briefing, CNN’s Jim Acosta cornered White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders over Trump’s attack on free speech and his indifference about doing anything to tackle gun violence in America. Bringing up the Second Amendment in relation to the recent shooting in Las Vegas, Acosta challenged Huckabee Sanders and asked what most of us have been waiting for:
The president tweets this morning he’d like to see the Senate intelligence committee investigate news outlets and I guess this quest to go after fake news. Does he value the First Amendment as much as he values the Second Amendment?”
Huckabee Sanders lied through her teeth and replied, “Absolutely. The president is an incredible advocate of the First Amendment.” Then, she bashed the media relentlessly, claiming that the media was biased:
We’ve seen recent information that says only 5% of media coverage has been positive about this president and this administration while at the same time you have the stock market and economic confidence at an all-time high, ISIS is on the run, unemployment’s at the lowest it’s been in 17 years, we’ve cut regulations at a historic pace, we’re fixing the VA for our vets. You’ve only found 5% of your time to focus on those big issues. No a lot of the things you cover, not a lot of the petty palace intrigue that you spend your time on, I think we need to move towards a certainly more fair, more accurate and frankly a more responsible news media for the American people.”
Trump and his team are having a hard time admitting that all of this negative coverage that they are painting as “bias” is usually true. Trump’s presidency has been a disaster and Trump is struggling to keep it together. That’s not “fake news” – it’s reality.
Huckabee Sanders knew she was in over her head, so when Acosta tried to follow up, she wouldn’t even give him the time of day. You can watch Acosta corner her below:
