Former Secretary of State Colin Powell, who is a retired four-star general that served under three Republican presidents, denounced Donald Trump as “a national disgrace” and an “international pariah,” in emails recently posted online after they were hacked.
These particular comments came from an email sent to Emily Miller, a journalist who is also Powell’s former aide. The email, dated June 17, 2016, also said Trump “is in the process of destroying himself, no need for Dems to attack him. [Speaker of the House] Paul Ryan is calibrating his position again.”
Powell’s emails were posted on the website DCLeaks.com, which is widely believed to have Russian ties, making this just the most recent example of possible Russian interference in American politics.
In another email to Miller on Aug. 21, Powell ripped Trump for his “racist” birther movement that believes President Obama was born outside of the United States.
“Yup, the whole birther movement was racist,” Powell wrote. “That’s what the 99% believe. When Trump couldn’t keep that up he said he also wanted to see if the certificate noted that he was a Muslim.”
“As I have said before, ‘What if he was?’ Muslims are born as Americans everyday,” Powell added.
Powell then touted Obama’s impressive qualifications, including the fact that he is a Harvard graduate and was an editor of the Law Review.
In the same email, Powell noted that Roger Ailes, Trump’s trusted adviser who has now been ousted as CEO of Fox News after allegations of sexual harassment surfaced, wasn’t likely to help him gain any ground with women voters.
“And Ailes as an advisor won’t heal women, don’t you think?” Powell wrote.
Powell sent out an email in May, with “racism” as the subject line, where he once again slammed the GOP as a whole, writing, “Or as I said before the 2012 election, ‘There is a level of intolerance in parts of the Republican Party.’”
In December of last year, Powell sent an email to CNN’s Fareed Zakaria in which he reiterated just how much he detests talking to the media about Trump, writing, “You guys are playing his game, you are his oxygen. He outraged us again today with his comments on Paris no-go for police districts. I will watch and pick the timing, not respond to the latest outrage.”
Powell echoed this sentiment in another email, where he wrote that when it comes to Trump, “To go on and call him an idiot just emboldens him.”
Powell wrote a response to a news article about Trump giving out Sen. Lindsey Graham’s phone number in an email sent on July 21, 2015, in which he said the GOP nominee “has no sense of shame.”
Buzzfeed News was the first to publish what had been disclosed in the latest email dump. When Powell was contacted, he reportedly said only, “I have no further comment. I’m not denying it.”
