On Monday, FBI Director James Comey confirmed that there was ‘no information’ to back up alleged president Donald Trump’s claim that Barack Obama had his phones wiretapped before the U.S. 2016 election. In addition, Comey publicly confirmed an investigation into Russian interference in the presidential election and whether associates of the president were in contact with Moscow.
The New York Times reports:
Mr. Comey said that it is unusual for the F.B.I. to confirm or deny the existence of any investigations, but in unusual circumstances when it is in the public interest, the bureau sometimes will discuss such matters.
“This is one of those circumstances,” he said.
“The F.B.I., as part of our counterintelligence effort, is investing the Russian government’s efforts to interfere in the 2016 president election,” he continued, adding that the investigation included looking at whether associates of Mr. Trump were in contact with Russian officials, and colluded with them.”
The investigation had already begun, meaning that Comey announced an investigation into Hillary Clinton just before the election but said nothing back then about Trump. Perhaps he’s trying to make up for his error in judgment. Who knows, but the hearing is intense. All eyes are on Comey right now.
Rep Adam Schiff of California, the committee’s ranking Democrat, laid out the case that the Trump campaign was far too close to Russia.
“If the Trump campaign, or anybody associated with it, aided or abetted the Russians, it would not only be a serious crime, it would also represent one of the most shocking betrayals of our democracy in history,” he said.
As for Trump’s attacks during a tweet storm on former President Barack Obama, Comey said, “I have no information that supports those tweets, and we looked carefully inside the FBI,” adding that other government agencies agree with his conclusion. “The Department of Justice has asked me to share with you that the answers are the same for the Department of Justice and all its components. The Department has no information that supports those tweets.”
Meanwhile, Trey Gowdy is after the leakers, apparently unaware that our presidential election was stolen by a foreign hostile government.
