Condoleezza Rice has become the latest conservative voice to dump Trump after Friday’s “hot mic” incident. She’ll be joining a long list of Republicans that are hoping to find a last minute alternative before November’s election. She posted a message on social media asking him to step down Saturday afternoon:
Woman especially are finding it hard to support Trump after the incredibly sexist remarks he made about women back in 2005 in front of a microphone that he didn’t realize was on. Once upon a time it was considered a bit of a scandal when Joe Biden accidentally dropped the F-bomb in a similar situation. But Trump’s microphone caught a vulgar mouthful when he uttered the phrase “grab ’em by the pussy.”
In the 24 hours that have passed since the Washington Post released the audio, even Trump’s own wife has criticized him. He’s also received public un-endorsements from Carly Fiorina, Arnold Schwarzenegger, John McCain and several Republican Senators. Paul Ryan cancelled a campaign trip with the Donald and the RNC has said it will no longer fund his campaign.
Even Trump’s own running mate won’t talk to him at this point. Pence was seen dodging questions just after the news broke and has since canceled an appearance he planned to make with his running mate. Some are even speculating that he plans to withdraw from the Trump ticket. Others that he may try and run for president himself.
With just about a month to go until the election and the second presidential debate scheduled for Sunday afternoon, it’s likely too late for the Republican establishment to pick an alternative candidate. These poor devils are stuck with Trump and the mass grave he’s digging for the GOP.
It’s actually Trump’s popularity with a small core group of voters that makes this situation so absolute. In fact, the Republican party is dealing with the mess they created. And I don’t just mean that they have a crazy candidate because they’ve been appealing to crazy voters. I mean that they’ve created an environment where even the feeblest doubt is worth clinging to. For some die-hard Trumpets there is nothing he could do to lose their support.
These individuals will not accept another candidate and trying to remove him at this point would only feed into their paranoia and mean even more division for the party. Some of them are even threatening to riot if Trump doesn’t win, and he’s pretty certainly not going to win. This is going to be one big, messy comeuppance.
