This is damning evidence that Donald Trump doesn’t give a shit about those who fight for our country.
United States Air Force Col. Charles Beattie flew C-130 missions over Vietnam while Donald Trump dodged military service during the war by obtaining several deferments.
After the war, Beattie remained in the reserves and began working as a pilot for Eastern Airlines. Eastern Airlines respected Beattie’s military service and valued his experience, so they obeyed the law and granted Beattie leave to complete orders he had received to attend the Industrial College of the Armed Forces for nine months. Again, Eastern Airlines had no problem doing this and Beattie would get his job back once he finished his orders.
But after Donald Trump bought Eastern Airlines in 1989 and plastered his name on all the planes, he fired Beattie because he still had five months left to complete his orders. Beattie wanted to remain a pilot with the newly dubbed Trump Shuttle, Trump refused to keep Beattie on board because he couldn’t start in February like Trump demanded.
Naturally, Beattie filed a lawsuit against Trump because there are laws on the books such as the Veteran’s Reemployment Rights Act (VRRA) that prevent employers from firing employees who get called up to complete military commitments.
According to the VRRA, “[a]ny person who seeks or holds a position…shall not be denied hiring, retention in employment, or any promotion or other incident or advantage of employment because of any obligation as a member of a Reserve component of the Armed Forces.”
The Huffington Post summarized how U.S. District Court Judge Thomas Flannery saw the case as clear-cut that Trump had let Beattie go for the sole reason that he had to perform his military duties before he could start back to work for Trump and his newly acquired airline.
(1) Trump extended offers of employment to all Eastern employees based upon their seniority status; (2) Beattie was an Eastern pilot possessing the requisite seniority; (3) Trump declined to hire Beattie based upon his unavailability on the specified commencement date; and (4) Beattie’s unavailability was caused by his military commitment.
In the end, the court found that “Trump’s refusal to hire Beattie violated 38 U.S.C. § 2021(b) (3) of the VRRA and it will grant Beattie’s motion for partial summary judgment and deny Trump’s motion for summary judgment.”
In other words, Beattie won his case and Donald Trump is a total liar when he says he supports veterans. Beattie served his country in wartime with honor and Trump rewarded him by firing him because Beattie had no choice but to carry out his military orders before he could start back to work at the airline.
Trump should be ashamed of himself, and the American people should be ashamed that such a man is as close as he is to becoming commander-in-chief of our armed forces.
