Donald Trump’s campaign has picked up a new endorsement, and it’s definitely not something Republicans should be proud of.
In the 1990s, Vojislav Seselj encouraged Serbian ultranationalists to commit mass genocide against Muslims in Bosnia. As a result, 8,000 people were killed in ethnic cleansing campaigns in Bosnia, Croatia, and Serbia that were only stopped when NATO, led by the United States, intervened in 1999 with a series of air strikes on Belgrade.
The ethnic cleansing campaign also included rape, torture, the targeting of political leaders and intellectuals, and deportations.
Since then, Seselj has stood trial for crimes against humanity and was narrowly acquitted in March by the United Nations court in The Hague, a decision that drew condemnation from the chief prosecutor for the International Criminal Tribunal.
Now Seselj is once again leading his ultranationalist Radical Party supporters and he is telling them to support Donald Trump’s presidential campaign because he feels like the Republican nominee will be sympathetic toward their cause.
According to The Intercept,
Speaking to his supporters in somewhat broken English, Seselj said that the message for Serbian-Americans was simple: “Vote Trump, for future of Serbia.” In his own language he told Reuters later: “Trump is the alternative to globalization. He will destroy old centers of power in the United States and he is a supporter of Russia.” The Serb nationalist also praised Trump for “restoring American pride.”
Seselj made the remarks at a rally in protest of Vice-President Joe Biden’s visit to Belgrade to meet with Serbian Prime Minister Aleksandar Vucic.
And this isn’t the first time Seselj has spoken in support of Trump. He did so on Twitter in January, writing, “I call on brother Serbs who live in the USA to strongly support Republican Party candidate Donald Trump in the upcoming presidential elections.”
As we all know, Trump’s supporters also include white supremacists in the United States who have goals similar to Seselj’s. Trump’s call to build a wall to keep Hispanics out of the country and his call to persecute Muslims have rallied bigots to his campaign, including a man who promotes ethnic cleansing.
Trump’s close ties to Russia and Vladamir Putin are also cause for concern since he has seemingly been appeasing Putin by threatening to pull American involvement in NATO, which would embolden Russia to encroach upon Eastern Europe and could lead to Seselj inciting more violence against Bosnian Muslims with Putin’s blessing.
The fact that Donald Trump is being supported by a guy who supports ethnic cleansing should freak out everyone in this country. The last thing we need is a president who is cheered by monsters like Seselj.
