It looks like Republicans are getting careless in their desperation to attack Hillary Clinton.
For months, Donald Trump and his supporters have been crowing over any document Wikileaks releases to embarrass the Democratic nominee. And Russian hackers are working hard in support of Trump.
With all the alleged documents floating around, there is bound to be some that are fake that are being paraded around by Trump supporters.
But that’s exactly what has already happened and now the FBI is investigating.
According to Reuters,
The FBI and U.S. intelligence agencies are examining faked documents aimed at discrediting the Hillary Clinton campaign as part of a broader investigation into what U.S. officials believe has been an attempt by Russia to disrupt the presidential election, people with knowledge of the matter said.
A specific document has come under particular scrutiny by the FBI because United States Senator Tom Carper referred it to them after discovering a forged letter to Hillary Clinton.
Carper is quoted as saying the Department of Homeland Security had advised him of a risk that a “massive” cyber attack “could change the election results in favor of a specific candidate.” The document dated October 3 was reviewed by Reuters.
It concludes, “Any suspicious incident will be immediately reported to your assistants so that a recount of votes could be timely organized. You will not lose the election because of some compromised electronic voting systems.” The fake Carper letter is one of several documents presented to the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the U.S. Department of Justice for review in recent weeks, the sources said.
Trump ally Roger Stone actually circulated another document despite the fact that it is also a fake that is being investigated by law enforcement.
The document, identified as a fake by the Clinton campaign, claims poll ratings had plunged for Clinton and called for “severe strategy changes for November” that could include “staged civil unrest” and “radiological attack” with dirty bombs to disrupt the vote.
“If this is real: OMG!!” Stone crowed on Twitter last month.
So it appears that Trump supporters are literally circulating fake documents in an effort to make Hillary Clinton look bad. And by doing so, they are allowing themselves to be duped by the Russians, whom intelligence officials suspect are behind the fake documents and other schemes to interfere in our election.
U.S. intelligence officials have warned privately that a campaign they believe is backed by the Russian government to undermine the credibility of the U.S. presidential election could move beyond the hacking of Democratic Party email systems. That could include posting fictional evidence of voter fraud or other disinformation in the run-up to voting on Nov. 8, U.S. officials have said.
And Trump supporters are helping the Russians do that by circulating every document they see even if they are fake as long as it means hurting Hillary Clinton. Sounds like the FBI should be focusing more on Russia and Donald Trump’s ties to Putin instead of obsessing over Hillary’s emails.
