Former U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara just explained how much trouble Donald Trump is in. According to Bharara, who was fired by Trump under questionable circumstances just like James Comey, the former FBI Director seemed to be telling the truth when he testified before the intelligence committee last week. Bharara also made it crystal clear that Comey most definitely provided evidence of obstruction of justice by Trump.
Appearing on ABC’s “This Week,” the former U.S. attorney was asked if he thought Comey had lied under oath like Trump claims.
It doesn’t appear that way,” he said.
“I mean, you’ve got someone who has a reputation…for telling the truth, someone who has contemporaneous notes of what happened in these meetings and in these conversations.”
“On the other hand, I think a lot of people will tell you, that the president himself sometimes makes accusations that turn out not to be true.”
Bharara said that when it comes down to it, he thinks “most people will side, reasonably, with James Comey.” He then said that having heard Comey’s testimony, he believes there is “absolutely evidence” that Trump obstructed justice.
I think there’s absolutely evidence to begin a case — I think it’s very important for all sorts of armchair speculators in the law, to be clear that no one knows right now whether there is a provable case of obstruction,” he said on ABC’s “This Week.”
“It’s also true…that there’s no basis to say there’s no obstruction,” he added.
Going into more detail, Bharara explained that Comey’s sworn testimony is now on record and alleges that “on at least one occasion, the president of the United States, cleared the room of his vice president and his attorney general and told his director of the FBI that he should essentially drop the case against his former national security advisor.”
“Whether or not that is impeachable or that’s indictable, that’s a very serious thing and I’m not sure that people fully get that the standard is not just whether something is a crime or not,” Bharara said.
“Whether or not it can be charged as a crime or Congress will impeach, it is a very serious thing,” he added.
