During a panel discussion on Saturday, Fox Business News Host Maria Bartiromo, a staunch supporter of Donald Trump since the early days of his campaign, suggested something that indicated she may not have been paying attention all this time.
The only story lately, of course, is sexual allegations against various people — and that’s a good thing. America is well past the point where we need to have a serious discussion about not just disturbing allegations like those involving Roy Moore and the young teen girls he “dated” in his early 30’s, but also inappropriate behavior that leads to humiliation and shame for victims who weren’t necessarily molested outright, like Senator Al Franken’s “joke” picture in which he pretends to paw at the breasts of a sleeping woman.
But like anything involving political figures, it’s become a political discussion, and even a way to attack people in a partisan way.
Former Obama administration official Chris Lu, speaking to the panel, was expressing how difficult it is to separate politics from actions, and to keep hypocrisy out of the mix. He brought up the fact that Roy Moore is now facing charges by at least 9 women, while Donald Trump himself has faced even more than that, when Bartiromo interrupted him:
Just to be clear, there are no allegations against the president.”
Insert record scratch here.
Lu went on to say that the president faced allegations from before his time in office, to which Maria countered that Trump had said the charges were false — as if that simply settled the case:
He said during the campaign that wasn’t true. In fact, didn’t he say also that, you know, all of this will come to light and there will be a lawsuit?”
There of course IS no lawsuit, because Donald Trump would then be forced to lie under oath. At this point, there have been more women who have come forward with stories of abuse by Trump than in any high profile case other than perhaps Harvey Weinstein or Bill Cosby.
But Bartiromo insisted that the picture in the case of Al Franken — which depicts something other than what his accuser says it does (in that he can’t be “groping” her if he’s not actually touching her) — made Franken’s actions worse than the accusations Trump has faced, because there’s “proof.” Calling the situations “apples and oranges,” Maria declared,
We’re talking about a situation where we have a picture with the guy’s hands on her breasts. You can’t compare the two.”
Aside from the fact that she describes a picture that doesn’t exist, I’m certain that Donald Trump’s victims would beg to disagree.
