I receive death threats on a regular basis. It’s part of any job that involves writing things that make conservatives angry — and I make them angry a lot. Normally, I ignore them. On occasion, I have some fun with it. But sometimes, rarely, they seem credible enough for me to actually take them seriously (even if I act like I do not). I received one of those last night in response to a story I wrote in which I called racist, right-wing legend Chris Kyle a liar — because he was a liar.
Nothing was misrepresented in any way. Kyle was a man who, while he served our country, was an awful racist who thought killing people he called “savages” was “fun.” He made up a story about slaughtering black people in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, killing carjackers, and getting into a brawl with Jesse Ventura. But most importantly, he lied about his military record when he repeatedly misrepresented the number of medals he received for his service.
As someone whose grandfather served in World War II and earned numerous accolades, including a purple heart, I find this extremely offensive. He always told me that “integrity” was the most important part of a serviceman’s job above and beyond all else. When I was about seven years old, he told me that it doesn’t matter what you accomplish in life if you can’t look yourself in the mirror. As someone who served our nation honorably, he would not have been able to respect someone who lied about his record. He didn’t leave part of his hip in Europe so people like Kyle could disgrace the uniform.
The unfortunate reality is that some who wear the uniform aren’t fit to wear it, no matter how skilled they are. No one can deny that Chris Kyle knew how to shoot a gun, but he was a terrible human being who deserves our disdain rather than our respect. But right-wing hero-worship often trumps things like facts, so it was completely natural that the hate mail would roll in. One person who contacted me, Ken Snover, went far beyond calling me a Socialist, Communist, “n*gger-lover,” race-traitor, and all the other cute nicknames the “Christians” on the Right have for me.
Snover, whose Facebook profile says he lives in Winter Haven, Florida, is an unemployed trucker according to a conversation he had with a friend under one of his profile photos. Having apparently quit his job because his boss, Brian at Total Transportation, is “a f*ggot piece of crap,” Snover dedicates way too much time (more than zero minutes) to contacting people who write things he doesn’t like and threatening the lives of them and their families — at least I can assume this based on personal experience.
In many ways, Ken is typical of the uneducated smegma scraped from Donald Trump’s under-taint who contact me to share their stupid, stupid thoughts — right down to his inability to spell at a third-grade level and complaints that I call bigots “bigots” and racists “racists.” He even opened with a death wish:
For the record, I receive no federal aid, though I have in the past and do not consider it shameful to accept a little help while struggling to get by working 40+ hours a week. I didn’t entertain his bigoted questions about “Muslim involvement” in the world’s problems (because he’s an idiot and I would not have made an impact on his beliefs anyway), nor did I bother pointing out that his claim about cops shooting more whites than blacks is based on faulty data. But I did, as I do with what my colleagues call my “fan club” on a regular basis, mock him just a little bit. After all, he attacked my mommy.
Then things got crazy and he quickly became more specific with his threats.
He invited me to Florida so he could meet up with me and act out his desire to kill me, but I declined (though I did recommend a restaurant I visited while on vacation earlier this year). Naturally, he was displeased that he would have to wait a whole year so he promised he would “find” me after he stopped off to rape my mother:
After I pointed out that I have no respect for Chris Kyle because he was a disgrace to the uniform, no matter his accomplishments that he didn’t lie about, he decided to ramp up the homophobic slurs:
So…f*ck it. Why not make him a little uncomfortable, right?
He became fixated on his fantasy about me enjoying the physical love of another man, but quickly retreated, never to be heard from again:
Ken’s Facebook posts are a smorgasbord of bigotry and hate. He even wants to know when “White History Month” is:
Why am I sharing this with you? Because Ken, and people like him, will be voting for Trump in November. Make sure you head to the polls and VOTE BLUE.
