Regardless of how we, as liberals, feel about war, we can all agree that the men and women who have served our country should not ever be forced to go hungry — but apparently, a Jack in The Box in Bakersfield, California disagrees.
The fast food chain has fired 19-year-old Alex Mesta, because he had the audacity to give free tacos to a homeless veteran who stopped in the restaurant for a cup of coffee. According to a post on Facebook:
So every day this older gentleman came in for his cup of coffee $0.80 that is with a discount that Jack in the Box gives all servicemen and women….. just so happen that somebody previously ordered two tacos and did not take them so this 19 year old boy offered them to the veteran and said it is not much but thank you for your service .
This young man was fired for giving away two Taco valued at $0.99 he offered to pay Jack in the Box back for them he said it was not right because they were going to throw them away anyways.
That’s right, Jack in The Box fired this teen because he gave a homeless veteran tacos that were going to go into the trash anyway. The management at the California would have rather thrown food away than feed a man who served his country honorably.
Jack in The Box is defending its decision to fire Mesta by saying his termination had little to do with the tacos and they love veterans — honest!
Regarding this incident, while it would not be appropriate to provide complete details on an internal disciplinary issue, our actions in this case were not based on just one incident and had nothing to do with the guest’s military experience. We too are grateful to our veterans and to the men and women currently serving in the armed forces.
According to the Green Restaurant Association, a single restaurant in the United States wastes 100,000 pounds of food every year and as a whole, the country throws about 40 percent of its food away. Meanwhile, in 2015, one in six households did not make enough money to feed their families. Restaurants like Jack in The Box could help solve the problem of hunger in this country by donating their uneaten food, but instead, they’d rather punish employees who try to do just that.
This young man did something a lot of people wouldn’t think to do, he tried to help someone and he was fired for it. Jack in The Box should be ashamed of themselves, but, of course, like most American corporations they give zero fucks about doing the right thing.
