During a speech at the Intelligence and National Security Alliance Leadership Dinner, FBI Director James Comey explained that what makes the FBI’s job easy is their impartiality, the fact that the bureau is “not on anybody’s side.” Speaking about the difficulties of the past year, he Comey said that despite it all, he has “never been prouder.”
I’ve never been prouder of the FBI,” he said. “What makes it easy is we’re not on anybody’s side ever. We’re not considering whose ox’ll be gored by this action or that action, whose fortunes will be helped by this or that.
We just don’t care, and we can’t care. We only ask, so what are the facts? What’s the law? What’s the right thing to do here?”
Comey added that in today’s “hyperpartisan” climate, “most people see the world different than we do.” He went on to say that this was a problem when he testified before Congress because “they see facts as how it will affect my side.” Comey and the FBI, on the other hand, apparently don’t have this problem because they don’t take sides.
These words coming from Comey are quite ironic when you look at his actions during the election. He testified to the House Intelligence Committee that the FBI began investigating Russia’s interference in the 2016 election, and the possibility that Donald Trump was colluding with them, way back in July. But he didn’t think the public needed to know about this. You can’t reveal information about an investigation like that during an election, right? But if we’re talking about Hillary Clinton, then the rules all change. Comey had no problem announcing that they were investigating her emails again, even though it turned out to be nothing but a bunch of bullsh*t.
But he never takes sides. Sure. Sounds totally legit. You can watch Comey’s remarks below.
