As Trump and his Cabinet lackeys pat themselves on the back for their less-than-amazing relief efforts in Puerto Rico, and make excuse after excuse for the delays and problems, the mayor of San Juan is painting a very different picture.
Trump’s acting Secretary of Homeland Security said that their response is “a good news story,” to which Mayor Carmen Yulin Cruz retorted, “Damn it, this is not a good news story. This is a people-are-dying story.”
And that’s the message her t-shirt bore on an interview with Anderson Cooper. It’s a black t-shirt with “Help us, we are dying” emblazoned across the chest in bold, white letters.

She’s begging the Trump administration to actually step up and do something real there. So far, it’s like all we’ve done is give tokens of help to them. At a press conference, she broke down, saying:
We are dying here. I cannot fathom the thought that the greatest nation in the world cannot figure out the logistics for a small island of 100 miles by 35 miles. So, mayday we are in trouble.”
Trump bragged that Puerto Rico’s governor, Ricardo Rossello, said, “The administration and the president, every time we’ve spoken, they’ve delivered.” But while Rosello has praised our paltry response, he’s also said that it’s “still not where it needs to be, certainly it’s not.” Out of fear, anger and frustration, though, Mayor Cruz just castigated the administration:
FEMA asks for documentation, I think we’ve given them enough documentation. They had the gall this morning…of asking me: ‘What are your priorities, mayor?’
…Well, where have you been? And I have been very respectful of the FEMA employees. I have been patient but we have no time for patience anymore.
So, I am asking the president of the United States to make sure somebody is in charge that is up to the task of saving lives.
I will do what I never thought I was going to do: I am begging. I am begging anyone that can hear us to save us from dying. If anybody out there is listening to us, we are dying. And you are killing us with the inefficiency and bureaucracy.
I am done being polite, and I am done being politically correct. I am mad as hell because my people’s lives are at stake.
I’m asking members of the press to send a mayday call. We are dying here. If we don’t solve the logistics, we are going to see something close to a genocide.”
It’s long past time for the Trump administration to get its fucking act together on this, because Cruz is right. People are dying and this administration doesn’t seem to care. Hell, Trump was out golfing when he should have been at the White House coordinating our response. He only cares now because the press is on his case. That’s the only time he ever really cares about anything. American citizens are dying. Is it really any wonder she wore that shirt on television?
