Former Republican presidential candidate Mike Huckabee, who was unable to generate more than 10 percent of support from his own voting base this election cycle, came out from the ether this weekend to let everyone know he’s still an imbecile who remains untethered to reality.
After the shootings in Dallas during a Black Lives Matter protest of the police killings of Alton Sterling and Philando Castile, Huckabee just felt like shouting at no one in particular that we’ve got it all wrong. The killings of the two black men weren’t race related, they were gender related! Garsh, h’yuck.
Huckabee first wanted to make the point, though, that white people are killed in a greater number than black people, saying during a Fox News interview:
More white people have been shot by police officers this past year than minorities. More likely that a black police officer will shoot a black person. We don’t ever hear that from Obama or Loretta Lynch.
We probably don’t hear President Obama or Attorney General Loretta Lynch make that claim because in context it’s just not true.
The Washington Post explains:
Huckabee appears to have cited the Post’s findings that of the 990 people shot in 2015, 948 people were male, 494 were white and 258 were black. So using raw numbers, Huckabee’s claim is accurate.
So, even though more whites were killed by police in 2015 by sheer numbers, blacks were three times as likely to be killed by police. Blacks comprise 12 percent of the U.S. population; black men represent 6 percent.
Moreover, the trends in the first six months of 2016 mirrored the trends from 2015. Black people were shot at 2.5 times the rate of white people.
But math is hard, and Huckabee wasn’t about to admit his error. In response to being fact-checked by the Post, in true Huckabee fashion he misses the point entirely, turns the derp dial up to 11, and redirects the country down a dead end to claim that the real movement shouldn’t be about black people, but males:
It’s not me that needs to be ‘fact checked.’ It’s the Post — I only said exactly what YOU reported. My comments were 100 percent factual. The pure facts also reveal that 94 percent of those killed by police are men, so by your ‘proportional’ standards, the real movement in America should be ‘Male Lives Matter.’
Oh, Huckabee, you’ve outdone yourself this time. The real reason so many people are being unjustifiably shot by police is due to pervasive misandry, gotcha. Racism just simply could never be a factor. Nope, no way, no how! Because in Huckabee’s weird little world racism just doesn’t exist.
Last year, during the debate over flying the Confederate flag over government buildings after the shootings in a South Carolina church, Huckabee claimed God has already cured racism:
I keep hearing people saying we need more conversations about race. Actually we don’t need more conversations. What we need is conversions because the reconciliations that changes people is not a racial reconciliation, it’s a spiritual reconciliation when people are reconciled to God.
When I love God and I know that God created other people regardless of their color as much as he made me, I don’t have a problem with racism. It’s solved!
I guess we can all just be happy he didn’t make a food analogy. Now fade Mike, fade back into that irrelevancy we were all starting to enjoy.
