Cinemark, the movie theater chain that owns the Century movie theater in Aurora Colorado, is in the process of proving just how corrupt and disgusting corporate America is by asking victims and their families of the mass shooting that happened there to pay the company’s legal fees.
The movie theater is where 4 years ago, James Holmes opened fire on a crowd of movie watchers during the opening of a new Batman movie. James was armed with the weapon of choice when it comes to American mass murder, the AR 15. All in all, 12 people lost their lives that night and 70 others were injured.
After some time, there were legal questions on whether or not Cinemark theaters was liable in any way for the fact an armed gunman wearing body armor (not exactly inconspicuous) was able to get into the theater and do what he did. After a long legal process, it was ultimately found that Cinemark was not liable. You’d think that would satisfy the theater chain. Right?
Wrong. Cinemark is now trying to pry almost 700,000 dollars out of the surviving family members and injured victims of that night long ago. The fact that a winner in a court case is trying to get the loser to pay their legal fees isn’t exactly unheard of. However, there’s a context to this. Cinemark is a huge movie theater chain. 700,000 dollars is, relatively speaking, not a huge dollar amount for them. They could just absorb this cost and be happy that it’s over for them.
Instead, this corporation that has more money than they know what to do with is actually trying to force the family members of people who died that night to pay them an exorbitant amount of money. It isn’t enough for Cinemark that these people lost loved ones. It also isn’t enough that the injured who survived will be dealing with permanent physical and mental issues for the rest of their lives. No, for Cinemark they have to pay the damned theater chain now on top of all that.
Cinemark could have been the better person here. They could have just let it be and allowed these people to deal with the fact they lost their lawsuit. It surely wasn’t fun for them to have had to re-live all these details of that night only to come up with nothing. Instead, they’re handing them the most insulting bill they’ve ever gotten in their lives.
