This is irrefutable proof that Republicans are trying to rig elections for themselves.
Rather than change their unpopular policy views to attract more voters, Republicans are trying to force their agenda upon us instead by guaranteeing that they will always be in power by enacting voter ID laws that suppress black voters.
Last month, the courts blocked North Carolina’s draconian voting law that slashes early voting and requires all voters to have a photo ID.
Republicans insist that they are not racist and that the laws are merely to stop voting fraud. The problem is that voter fraud is so rare that it is basically non-existent in this country. Also, the law disproportionately affects African-Americans, who are more likely to vote early and are more likely to not have a photo ID.
In short, Republicans are engaged in voter suppression efforts across the nation that are meant to keep themselves in power by crook.
And there’s proof.
The Washington Post investigated North Carolina’s law and how it came to be and the beginnings are ominous from the start.
“Is there any way to get a breakdown of the 2008 voter turnout, by race (white and black) and type of vote (early and Election Day)?” a staffer for the state’s Republican-controlled legislature asked in January 2012.
“Is there no category for ‘Hispanic’ voter?” a GOP lawmaker asked in March 2013 after requesting a range of data, including how many voters cast ballots outside their precinct.
And in April 2013, a top aide to the Republican House speaker asked for “a breakdown, by race, of those registered voters in your database that do not have a driver’s license number.”
That breakdown showed that if Republicans slash early voting and require photo ID that they can tip elections their way because the law they passed would prevent a large percentage of black people from voting. And so, a law was born.
You see, that’s the only way Republicans can win the election with mostly white voters.
The Post also got a confession from a Republican consultant in the state that the voter ID laws are meant to suppress voters.
Longtime Republican consultant Carter Wrenn, a fixture in North Carolina politics, said the GOP’s voter fraud argument is nothing more than an excuse.
“Of course it’s political. Why else would you do it?” he said, explaining that Republicans, like any political party, want to protect their majority. While GOP lawmakers might have passed the law to suppress some voters, Wrenn said, that does not mean it was racist.
“Look, if African Americans voted overwhelmingly Republican, they would have kept early voting right where it was,” Wrenn said. “It wasn’t about discriminating against African Americans. They just ended up in the middle of it because they vote Democrat.”
This is unbelievably outrageous. According to Wrenn, black people are basically being punished by the Republican Party simply because they won’t blindly vote them.
This makes it incredibly clear what the purpose of voter ID laws are in states across the country. They are about rigging elections in favor of Republicans so they can force their agenda upon us. Because they are incapable of winning an election fair and square by selling us on those policies. That’s because their policies don’t work and are deeply unpopular.
The 2016 Election just became that much more important. The Supreme Court could strike these laws down as the racist trash they are, but that’s going to take putting Hillary Clinton in the White House to do it. It’s time to put Republicans in their place and make voting a guaranteed fundamental right again.
