Republicans have blamed so many ridiculous things on our president, it became a meme. Now conservative columnist, Ross Douthat, is blaming him for Trump. In an op-ed for the New York Times, Douthat makes the case for dropping responsibility for yet another right-wing blunder in Obama’s lap.
The politics of personality are one reason cited by Douthat. President Obama’s popularity as a celebrity primed us for the spectacle of The Donald. Never mind that Obama is immensely likable and his candidacy was historically significant. Will.i.am made a video for him, so that opened the door for Trump.
Another reason given to blame Obama for the Trump mess is, naturally, Obama’s “imperial” style of leadership. If he was as much of a dictator as they make him out to be, we’d all have single-payer healthcare and there wouldn’t be nearly as many guns out there. Not that reality is ever considered when a regressive gets going on about all the rights they’ve lost.
…the current president has expanded executive authority along almost every dimension: launching wars without congressional approval, claiming the power to assassinate American citizens, and using every available end-around to make domestic policy without any support from Congress.
It’s almost as if nobody used executive orders before Obama took office. In truth, he has issued 231, 60 fewer than George W. Bush. Patron Saint of Conservatism Ronald Reagan issued 381 of these imperial decrees. There are valid critiques of how President Obama has fought the War on Terror. Obama’s drone policy may have created a bunch of terrorists, but it did not create the Trumpenstein monster.
Finally, the most ridiculous reason for Obama’s culpability in this, is how he has pushed for liberal policies on issues such as immigration, gun control, marriage equality, and abortion. Imagine that. A progressive president pushing for progressive ideals. How dare he? Douthat opines that this pushes independent voters away from establishment candidates. A push that increases Donald Trumps base.
The right-wingers have failed to control their modern Prometheus. Now he’s loose in the village, throwing immigrant children into lakes and embarrassing us on the world stage. Of course, the villagers in Mary Shelley’s classic novel used their pitchforks and torches to go after the monster. Ours are lining up behind him in red hats. Thanks, Obama.
