If you have never heard of the Filipino President Rodrigo Duterte, you should really start paying attention to world news. Duterte, who was elected to office this year, is so horrible the UN has condemned his leadership just a few months in. The 16th president of the island nation has called for the massacres of anyone in his country who uses or sells (or is suspected of using or selling) narcotics and has even offered money and medals to anyone who helps him kill people. Before his election in April, Duterte said,”All of you who are into drugs, you sons of bitches, I will really kill you.” Now, just a few months later nearly 2,000 people, many of them innocent, have been murdered in the Philippines. Duterte is truly one of the most despicable leaders, of any country, in modern history.
On Monday, just days before the murderous president was set to meet with President Obama, he slammed America and our president, saying:
Who does he think he is? I am no American puppet. I am the president of a sovereign country and I am not answerable to anyone except the Filipino people. Son of a b****, I will swear at you.
Duterte’s comments came after White House officials said Obama planned to confront the Filipino president about the bloodshed in his country. Now, the POTUS is firing back and has canceled the meeting he had scheduled on Tuesday. During a press conference after he emerged from the Group of 20 summit in Hangzhou, China, Obama said that he asked his aides to speak with Filipino officials “to find out is this, in fact, a time where we can have some constructive, productive conversations.”
I always want to make sure that if I’m having a meeting, that it’s actually productive and we’re getting something done,” Obama told reporters.
Clearly, Obama has decided that meeting with Duterte is a waste of his time and is now scheduled to meet with South Korean President Park Geun-hye.
Republicans often claim that Obama is weak, but this is just another example of how untrue that narrative is. Instead of sitting down and speaking to a man hell-bent on murdering his own people, Obama has chosen to spend his time with a leader who wants to have a productive conversation. Our president didn’t lash out and start calling Duterte names like a President Trump would, he just brushed the statements off and moved on to other things. That is the sign of a truly great leader.
