House Speaker Paul Ryan (R-WI) was reluctant to endorse Donald Trump, even after he became the Republican Party’s nominee. But eventually, he did endorse him. Since then he has somehow excused every atrocious thing that Trump has said or done.
True to form, Ryan brushed off Trump’s latest foot-in-mouth episode as well. According to the Speaker, Trump’s suggestion that “Second Amendment people” are the only ones who can stop Hillary Clinton was just a “joke gone bad.”
Speaking at a press conference after he had won his Republican primary, Ryan acted as if it was no big deal that his party’s presidential nominee had just hinted at the assassination of the former Secretary of State.
I’ve been a little busy today. I heard about this Second Amendment quote. It sounds like just a joke gone bad. I hope he clears it up very quickly. You should never joke about something like that. I didn’t actually hear the comments, I only heard about those comments,” Ryan said.
During a campaign rally in Wilmington, North Carolina, Trump lamented that a Hillary Clinton presidency would be the end of the Second Amendment thanks to the evil liberal Supreme Court justices she would surely appoint. Then, Trump went off the deep end and alluded to murder as a way to prevent this gun-grabbing scenario.
“If she gets to pick her judges,” he said, “nothing you can do, folks. Although the Second Amendment people, maybe there is.”
Following the fast and furious backlash to Trump’s remarks, his campaign tried to twist his words and insisted that he only meant that Second Amendment people could stop Clinton by voting for him. Trump spokesman Jason Miller issued a statement on Tuesday arguing that Trump really didn’t say what he said, and even if he did, he didn’t really mean it.
“It’s called the power of unification – 2nd Amendment people have amazing spirit and are tremendously unified, which gives them great political power. And this year, they will be voting in record numbers, and it won’t be for Hillary Clinton, it will be for Donald Trump.”
