Congressional Republicans are doing everything they can to blame the shutdown and the fact that many federal employees—including the military—will see their pay delayed until the government reopens. Unfortunately for them, in their desperation to convince anyone with sense that this is the Democrats’ fault, they’re trying to stick to scripts and failing miserably.
House Speaker Paul Ryan went on CBS’ “Face the Nation” this morning to discuss the shutdown, and got busted trying to lie about military pay. First off, Mitch McConnell blocked a resolution that would have ensured our fighting men and women continue to get paid despite the shutdown. Then Ryan tried to claim that Democrats filibustered away a resolution that would continue paying our troops.
Host John Dickerson said as much:
The Democrats didn’t filibuster the payment for the troops separate and apart from-“
Ryan interrupted him, saying:
The bill we passed paid troops.”
Right there, he’s talking about the spending bill that failed in the Senate, and not the resolution Senator Claire McCaskill introduced that would have kept military pay flowing despite the lack of a spending bill. He’s trying to shift blame for this onto Democrats with an obvious lie.
Ryan said that military pay gets deferred during a shutdown, which would ordinarily be true and is true for civilian federal employees who must work through a shutdown. But Dickerson wasn’t done with his facts. He told Ryan that our troops did, in fact, get paid during the 2013 shutdown.
And that’s where Ryan got caught lying. He repeated, “No, their pay gets deferred.” It didn’t in 2013. Watch him lie below, starting at the 1:13 mark:
Ryan’s own website makes it clear that, during the 2013 shutdown, our troops still got paid. President Obama (horror of all horrors) signed the “Pay Our Military Act” on Sept. 30, 2013, the day before Tea Party Republicans shut down the government for 16 days over their insistence on defunding key provisions of Obamacare.
Military pay was not deferred because Obama knew what they sacrifice for the rest of us.
But these Republicans? Now, they’re so intent on trying to create a squeaky-clean image for themselves that they’ll say and do anything to turn Democrats into the bad guys.
