Donald Trump and his Republican minions have been on this ridiculous high ever since they finally managed to pass their highly unpopular and disastrous tax plan. It marks Trump’s first and only legislative victory in his entire first year of office — which is hardly something to brag about. But that hasn’t stopped the GOP from going all-out in an undeserved celebration.
Speaker of the House Paul Ryan (R-WI) is rewarding a historically unproductive Republican-controlled Congress by granting them a Christmas gift they really don’t need (or deserve) — more time off! Ryan is giving his Republican buddies an extra week of vacation in January, despite the fact that there is a massive agenda of things that need to get done within the next few weeks — like figuring out how to keep the government funded so it doesn’t shut down, or how to protect millions of America’s children from losing their health care coverage. There are several other pressing matters that need attention as well, but *of course* vacation should take priority over fixing the country. NBC News reported:
It’s painfully obvious that this should not be happening, as New York Magazine pointed out:
Fortunately, Paul Ryan found a solution to all of these vexing issues: Do the minimum amount possible now, and punt the rest until after vacation.”
MSNBC’s Hallie Jackson also trashed Ryan for this decision, when so many complicated decisions needed attention. She said:
It feels almost insurmountable. That’s kind of the point here, Dave. It’s not the hottest of takes to point out that governing by punt is not exactly the greatest way to run the country. Yet this is what we’ve seen again and again in Congress. How problematic is it that you have a really big list of priorities, and I had a top White House office on this show yesterday ticking through all the things they want to do in January. It feels almost insurmountable the number of thing they have to get done, the number of things they have to compromise or come to a deal on, in like two-and-a-half-weeks after the new year.”
There is no way Trump and the Republicans will get any of those things accomplished within the next few weeks, as it took the GOP-controlled Congress almost a full year to pass their tax plan. Trump and his Republican buddies are allergic to doing their jobs, and America is clearly suffering for their laziness.
