Clearly furious, Obama blasted Republicans for their vow to indefinitely block the appointment of a ninth Supreme Court justice if Hillary Clinton is elected.
Speaking at a Clinton campaign rally in North Carolina, the president laid into senate Republicans and singled out Sen. Richard Burr in particular.
“Some are saying they won’t appoint a ninth Supreme Court justice at all,” Obama said. He then reminded the crowd that Burr “just said that if Hillary wins, he’ll do everything he can to block all Supreme Court nominations.”
When Antonin Scalia died unexpectedly, Republicans were quick to promise that they would refuse to acknowledge any nominee that Obama put forth. They have held true to that promise and have not given a hearing to the president’s nominee, Merrick Garland. Garland now holds the record for the longest wait time for a hearing.
Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell defended the obstructionism by arguing that the American people should get to choose the next Supreme Court justice. Therefore, he insisted, no appointment should be made until after the presidential election. Now, they are vowing to continue to block the filling of the empty seat on the Supreme Court if Clinton wins the White House.
“Now keep in mind, the reason they said they wouldn’t have a hearing or vote for my Supreme Court nominee, bucking all of American history, was because, ‘We thought the American people should decide the next Supreme Court justice,’” Obama said. “Now they’re saying, ‘Well, if they don’t decide the way we want them to decide, maybe we won’t even do that.’”
Then, the president took aim at Burr:
“Eleven years ago, Richard Burr said a Supreme Court without nine justices would not work. Well, what changed?” Obama said. “What, only Republican presidents get to nominate judges? Is that in the Constitution? I used to teach constitutional law. I’ve never seen that provision.”
Republicans don’t give a damn about the Constitution or this country. It is a game to them and all they are worried about is making themselves a total pain in the ass of the American people if they don’t get their way. They’ll block Supreme Court nominations. They’ll cause shutdowns of the entire government. It all amounts to nothing more than childish temper tantrums. But these are the people running the country. It is time to vote them out.
