Dear anyone who doubts Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders’s dedication to civil rights,
Okay, I get it. Trust me. I’ve been deeply involved in the political realm for the better part of a decade, and peripherally, for my entire life. I understand that politics is all about passion and, sadly in my humble opinion, cutthroat smear campaigns, coupled with a willingness to do whatever it takes to propel your candidate of choice to the top. Because you’re right and everyone else is wrong. It takes an ability to possess an almost narcissistic level of certainty to call yourself a proper pundit. And that’s okay. That’s the political game, and that’s what we signed up for when we decided to disseminate our opinions with such fervor and unwavering confidence.
But, just LYING…that’s not what we do, my liberally-leaning friends. A “liberal” can be a lot of things: someone who wants social justice, someone who’s tired of being oppressed by oligarchical one-percenter elitist f**ks, someone who doesn’t want to destroy the planet, someone who thinks we should be able to harness the power of a medicinal plant instead of taking pills pushed on us by our Big Pharma pimpin’ doctors, someone who just wants to marry the person they love and refuses to let “Christian family values” conservatives dictate what they can or can’t do in their own bedrooms — hell, maybe even all of the above. Liberals, however, are not unabashed liars.
If you doubt that Bernie Sanders cares about African-Americans and civil rights, you’re not just wrong — you’re disingenuous — and that’s not what we do. That’s what REPUBLICANS do. We’re better than that. You’re better than that. And if you won’t look at facts and evidence and be flexible, I think I speak for most real liberals when I say, we don’t want you. You obviously don’t get it.
So, with that being said, in all its brutal honesty, watch this video of a 21-year-old Bernie Sanders getting arrested at a civil rights movement protest fifty years ago — before a lot of us were even born — and tell me with a straight face that this man is not the real deal. Senator Bernie Sanders has been walking his civil rights talk since before 1963, the year in which this footage was taken at a school segregation protest on the southside of Chicago.
