It seems that President-elect Donald Trump’s behavior toward women has started to infect other Republican politicians. Christopher Von Keyserling, 71, was arrested and charged with fourth-degree sexual assault after allegedly pinching a female town employee’s genitals.
The incident took place in December 2016. Von Keyserling — a long-time Republican board member of Greenwich, Connecticut’s Representative Town Meeting — encountered the unidentified 57-year-old woman in the hallway of an unnamed town facility and began engaging in a political argument. At one point the woman reportedly told Von Keyserling that “it was a new world politically,” and that he needed to educate his colleagues. According to the warrant, the Von Keyserling allegedly replied: “I love this new world, I no longer have to be politically correct.”
She then told the politician that if he was “proud of that, I can’t help you.” Von Keyserling replied telling the woman that she was “nothing but a blood sucking lazy union employee.”
According to the warrant, the woman then uttered “F*ck you,” and began to walk back to her office.
She said Von Keyserling followed her into the office claiming that he wanted to speak with her co-worker. When the co-worker arrived, the worker informed Von Keyserling that she didn’t have time to talk to him. At that point, the alleged victim decided to leave the office with her co-worker because she didn’t want to be left alone with the accused. It was when she walked by that Von Keyserling allegedly reached around from behind her and pinched her groin area.
The victim threatened to punch him if he ever touched her again. She told authorities he “looked back with a really evil look in his eyes and said, ‘it would be your word against mine, and nobody will believe you,'” according to the warrant.
The next day the woman, accompanied by a friend and the Greenwich Assistant Director of Human Resources went down to the police station and reported the incident, where she placed a criminal complaint against Von Keyserling.
According to Von Keyserling’s attorney, the politician was only having a “jocular” moment of horseplay with a long-time friend he’s known for over 30 years.
In almost 30 years of practicing law in this town, I would say Mr. von Keyserling is the one person I would never suspect of having any inappropriate sexual predilections,” the lawyer, Phil Russell, said. “There was a playful gesture, in front of witnesses. It was too trivial to be considered anything of significance. To call it a sexual assault is not based in reality.”
Von Keyserling was arrested at Greenwich town hall on Wednesday.
However, Local Police said that surveillance video from the day of the incident seems to corroborate the victim’s story.
This is just another sad example of how Trump has managed to give people license to unleash the darkest parts of their souls. It’s astounding how these people believe that they can get away with this type of behavior, but that’s what Trump’s election victory signifies to them. And Von Keyserling will most likely not be the last Republican caught with his hand where it doesn’t belong.
