A Texas Republican state representative has introduced legislation designed to make abortions in his state a felony, which means that any woman who has an abortion would lose their right to vote in Texas, for life.
Tony Tinderholt, a Tea Party-affiliated Republican from Arlington, Texas, argues that despite the fact abortion is still legal in his state, women who get them should be charged with felonies anyway. And of course, once the women are felons they would lose their right to vote. Not only their right to vote but their job prospects as a felon in Texas would be severely limited, almost guaranteeing that they live in poverty.
As Ring of Fire’s Farron Cousin stated in the video below:
Honestly, at this point I don’t know why any women still live in the state of Texas. This state hates you and there is no other way to say that. They hate you. They do not think you are smart enough to make decisions. If you do make that decision then they want to ruin your life. They want to take away your right to vote. Hell, when you have a felony it’s a thousand times harder to get a job, including a minimum wage job. McDonald’s doesn’t typically hire people that have felonies. Same thing with big box stores. A felony on your record is almost a death sentence. It certainly is a sentence to live your life in poverty because you’ll never be able to find a good paying job with a felony on your record.
Even if you do, even if you overcome those odds, in the state of Texas they won’t let you vote. You got that felony because you’ve made that decision. It’s something that you had to do. Wasn’t an easy decision, but you had to do it. Maybe you had to do it to save your own life. Maybe you had to make that decision because you were raped. Doesn’t matter to them. You’re a felon and you don’t have the right to vote anymore. That’s what the state of Texas is telling women. Again, this is something that we will see other republican controlled states follow, because believe it or not Texas is not the reddest state in this country.
We still have places like Alabama, Georgia, Oklahoma. They will follow suit. My only hope, a message to women of Texas is get the hell out of there. They hate you. Go find somewhere where you’re treated like a human being and not of some object that has to be told by a man what you’re allowed to do with your life.”
Of course, this proposal is likely to fail, however, as we all know, one Republican bad idea tends to spread like a virus to other conservative nut job politicians in other states. It’s not hard to imagine this proposal popping up in other red states like Louisiana or Mississippi. What’s even worse, is that this could be a dry run for if or when Roe V. Wade is overturned by a Trump infected U.S. Supreme Court. Should that happen, it is believed that the states would once again decide individually on whether or not to allow abortions. That is unless Republicans pass a constitutional amendment prohibiting abortion. And don’t think a constitutional amendment is far fetched.
In 2016 at the Republican National Convention, the GOP adopted the so-called “human life amendment.” This bill would recognize fetuses as people and grant them Fourteenth Amendment protections. This idea is just one part of a broad anti-abortion party platform adopted at the convention. They also want to defund planned parenthood and sign into law the “Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act, which would prohibit abortions on unborn children who are “capable of experiencing pain” which is believed to be 20 weeks after conception.
Here’s a little more information on Tenderholt. The representative gained his notoriety in 2014 as being an extreme open-carry advocate whose radicalism went even beyond that of the National Rifle Association. He argued that people in Texas should have the right to carry firearms virtually everywhere.
Don’t be surprised if you see Tinderholt’s name mentioned again in national headlines as an appointment by the Trump administration. It seems that the new president has an affinity for giving wackjobs like him more power over other people’s lives. The Republican “War on Women” is alive and well.
