Word that Donald Trump’s Republican National Convention was going to be an absolute sh*tshow broke a few weeks ago, when it was officially announced that the racist, bigot, misogynist candidate was having trouble finding fellow GOPers to speak at the event. The convention is just days away, and it’s looking even worse than expected.
Trump managed to find a speaker – former rival Ted Cruz, who agreed to speak at the RNC despite the fact that Trump attacked his wife multiple times during his campaign. But even if Trump can find people to fill the silence, they might be speaking to empty seats! It turns out, tons of Republican politicians and operatives are ditching the RNC because they hate Trump with a passion and cannot stand to be anywhere near him if he gets the nomination.
According to interviews with Politico, many of these GOPers offered their reasons for not attending, and it’s clear that it’s personal. These people cannot stand Trump, and they’re not afraid to show it. Here are just some of the hilarious excuses Republicans are giving:
GOP digital strategist Will Ritter: “I would rather attend the public hanging of a good friend.”
GOP strategist Jason Roe: “I don’t want anything close to the appearance of supporting Trump. This ship can sink without me as a passenger.”
Jay Zeidman, a Texas health care executive whose family has been a major benefactor of the Republican Party: “What’s there to celebrate? The party has hit rock bottom in terms of leadership.”
Ryan Williams, a former Mitt Romney aide, said: “The convention is usually a four-day political party that every operative wants to go to, but it’s different this year. Republican political operatives are not excited about the nominee, and they don’t believe it will be a worthwhile convention to attend.”
Here are some more amazing excuses:
The conservatives that ARE going to the RNC are making it clear that they only reason they’re attending is because they’re being forced to. GOP pollster Chris Perkins, who will actually be in attendance, noted that the RNC is usually a major event that all GOPers want to be at. Perkins has attended every Republican convention since 1996, but says that this election cycle, Trump has ruined it for everyone:
Normally, we’re all jazzed up about getting together and celebrating our nominee. There’s nothing to celebrate this cycle. I’m going because I have to, not because I want to.
One of the most memorable quotes from the interviews came from a longtime GOP insider that is so ashamed of attending the RNC that he begged Politico to protect his identity so his colleagues wouldn’t find out. He said:
Don’t use my name. I don’t want anyone to know I’m there.
We don’t blame him. It turns out, that insider actually changed his mind a few days after the interview with Politico – he won’t be going after all.
Donald Trump has done such a great job at offending his own political party (and the rest of the country) that not only is he having trouble filling seats for the RNC, but he’s running out of options for choosing a running mate! Trump’s VP picks are dropping like flies. The RNC, and the rest of Trump’s campaign is going to be a disaster and we can’t wait to see this ship crash.
