It’s easy to understand how the White House might have trouble responding to any controversies right about now. Their whole world is crumbling around them, and as others have observed after finding out that Robert Mueller’s team has had an inside man for months, today is the last day that will be this good for Donald Trump — every day from now on will be a little bit worse.
But that’s no excuse for making a stupid mistake like the one Sarah Huckabee Sanders made Tuesday afternoon as she put herself out in front of an incredulous press who were forced to stand there and listen to her defend the racist statements that Trump’s Chief of Staff, John F. Kelly, made the night before on the premiere episode of The Ingraham Angle.
After some discussion of Confederate monuments, Kelly found himself looking like a fool as he stammered about what an “honorable man” Robert E. Lee, the greatest traitor America’s ever known, was during the Civil War, which Kelly also ridiculously asserted could have been avoided through “compromise.”
Needless to say, there was plenty of outrage to go around, as Americans of every stripe condemned what sure looked an awful lot like a defense of slavery from a current White House official.
And of course Sanders, being the media face of the Trump administration, must at all times convey the established policy of never backing down from anything. So what was her defense of John Kelly? She said that EVERY leader was “flawed,” as though (a) Robert E. Lee was a “leader” for anyone but traitors and (b) that some controversy among presidents was the same kind of “flaw” as committing treason against the United States.
But you can’t make people think of flaws in their leaders without making a list of the leaders you think are flawed, so Sarah did just that:
HI GUYS SARAH HUCKABEE SANDERS THINKS JFK AND KENNEDY WERE TWO DIFFERENT PRESIDENTS HAVE A GREAT AFTERNOON. pic.twitter.com/yfxT9MJw5e

Wait, WHAT? There have only been a few presidents who have been known by their initials, and she just named one of them twice in the same list. Does Sarah Huckabee Sanders really think JFK and Kennedy are two different people?
Now, when she comes back to the mic again, don’t be terribly surprised if she claims that she was talking about JFK and his brother Bobby Kennedy. Just smile and nod along.
