Sometimes when you snap a selfie you just aren’t thinking it through. Maybe there’s a mirror behind that catches your naked butt or an embarrassing mole. Maybe you forgot to clean your house before showing the world your cool new hairdo. There are entire websites dedicated to selfies gone wrong.
You have to wonder what Speaker Paul Ryan was thinking when he snapped that now-infamous intern selfie. While all liberal blogs who made fun of it were inundated with comments and messages about the 3 people of color conservatives managed to find that somehow made the GOP a diverse entity, the overall picture looked like a gathering of Academy Award nominees — and three of their friends.
It took minutes for the internet to see what Ryan and his party are blind to that the GOP is a gathering of entitled white folk looking out for the best interests of their entitled white children and their entitled white money. The selfie was best described in this anonymous meme that made its way around before Republicans even figured out why people were pointing at them and laughing:
Is it basically a cliché bad joke from “Undercover Brother?” Of course it is — and it’s hilarious. The worst part of the selfie is Ryan himself, whose Eddie Munster hair and perfectly punchable face makes the average liberal’s skin crawl. How he could be this ignorant is staggering. The lack of diversity isn’t just noticeable, it’s almost like it’s…on purpose. It’s no secret that the GOP has pretty much given up on the minority vote.
The Democrats have now officially responded with an intern selfie of their own, with somewhat…different results:

It doesn’t look like anyone will be counting the number of minorities in the crowd. Here’ it is from another angle:

The trick now will be to keep the ignorant racists that make up the Republican base from claiming this picture shows that while people are treated unfairly by the Democratic party. Those poor, oppressed white people — always being held down by the Democrats and their agenda to make minorities the majority.
Hate to break it to you, kids, but genetics is doing that for us. You see, as more of us are raised to NOT be bigoted assholes, we pass it on to our children. Children don’t recognize skin color until someone points it out to them. When the day comes that narrow-minded racists stop telling their kids that color makes a difference, the ignorance will disappear and we’ll finally be able to evolve as a society.
