Police Commissioner James O’Neill is not amused by amateur president Donald Trump’s roundup of undocumented immigrants. New York City Police officers will not comply with any warrants issued by federal immigration officials.
“It is critical that everyone who comes into contact with the NYPD, regardless of their immigration status, be able to identify themselves or seek assistance without hesitation, anxiety or fear,” O’Neill wrote, according to the Daily News.
O’Neill explained that Trump’s orders are contrary to how the NYPD conducts law enforcement.
“The NYPD does not conduct civil immigration enforcement,” he said. “Specifically, this department does not enforce administrative warrants issued by Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents or federal immigration judges solely in connection with civil immigration violations.”
“For example, the NYPD does not arrest or detain individuals for immigration violations such as overstaying a lawfully issued visa,” the Commissioner continued. “However, the NYPD does and will continue to honor federal immigration detainers when there is a risk to public safety.”
Homeland Security Secretary John Kelly on Tuesday called for any undocumented immigrants to be deported if they have been convicted or even charged with a criminal offense, however, that would include undocumented immigrants who have committed even minor traffic infractions.
In late January, New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio said his city will use the courts to fight Trump’s executive order to block federal funding going to “sanctuary cities.”
“We think it’s very susceptible to legal challenge,” he told CNN at the time. “If they make an attempt to pull that money, it will be from NYPD, from security funding to fight terrorism.”
This week, O’Neill asked Congress to pay for security costs for Trump Tower. He placed the cost for protection and crowd control at $25.7 million for the 75 days between Election Day and Trump’s Jan. 20 Inauguration. That’s an astounding amount of money for Trump to expect one city to pay.
In addition to that, Trump’s trips to Mar-a-Lago, the resort he calls the ‘Winter White House,’ is costing the taxpayers dearly. The cost for three trips totals $10 million and by the end of his term (if he lasts that long in office), that amount could run into hundreds of millions of dollars. During Obama’s two terms in office, travel costs amounted to $97 million.
Geez, Trump, even the police are resisting you.
