Do you ever wonder how on Earth Americans got to be so damn stupid? We see these people who are so set in their belief that the things they “know” are true and no matter how many facts or explanations they are presented with, they just won’t budge and accept the fact that they are woefully misinformed.
Well, now we have a clearer picture of how they came to be so badly educated. I give you America, Land I Love: In Christian Perspective.
Now you may be thinking, why on Earth would history need a Christian perspective? Aren’t facts just facts? No, not according to this textbook. Because some people in the religious right are so committed to their belief system they have to rewrite or gloss over history in order to make themselves feel comfortable.
For your enjoyment, the Christian perspective of American History:
The amendment is accurate, but the side explanation of the Second Amendment is not. The first four words of the Second Amendment say that arms are the right of “a well-regulated militia,” is not a guarantee to citizens.
The “Great Christian General” fought on the side of the confederacy after he resigned his position in the Union Army. Ulysses S. Grant who commanded the Union Army doesn’t get such a title as “Great Christian” because he fought for the rights of slaves to be free. Christian perspective, y’all.
Did you know Louis Agassiz is America’s greatest science teacher? No? That’s because you’re a heathen who was raised to believe Charles Darwin’s theory of evolution.
The definition of conservativism here is nice but not whole. Conservatives, known as the Federalists in the time of John Adams, distrusted the public, were elitists, and favored federal power over states rights. By contrast, Jeffersonian Republicans distrusted Britain, bankers, merchants and favored state power over national power. Conservatives by broad definition are traditionalists. Conservatives today oppose radical social change, oppose taxes, favor big business over workers, they favor free market capitalism, oppose civil rights and social justice, believe America should be a Judeo-Christian nation (despite the first Amendment) and have strong nationalistic tendencies. The above excerpt paints a nice picture but leaves out the ugly side of conservatism, while also subtly suggesting the opposing ideology — liberalism — is anti-decency, anti-morality, and anti-self-restraint.
Those darn radical women who were fighting for equal pay for equal work, homosexuals fighting for the same rights as other married couples, and environmentalists who wanted the country to be more conscious of pollution, waste and wildlife. Terrible lot.
This passage assumes that not adhering to the pre-established white, Judeo-Christian ways of thinking and living, makes people less American. Multiculturalism is defined as “the co-existence of diverse cultures, where culture includes racial, religious, or cultural groups and is manifested in customary behaviors, cultural assumptions and values, patterns of thinking, and communicative styles.” This text is a rejection of people’s right to live life the way they want and the belief that Americanism only comes in one form. We see anti-multiculturalism in southern public schools when teachers impose Christianity on students. We see it in the military’s approved hairstyles for black women. We see politicians say things like “English only!”
Multiculturalism is what makes America so unique and great. To suggest people have to give up their cultural, racial or religious backgrounds to “belong” is pure White Supremacy.
Gosh, slavery sounds like heaven! Too bad the radical Union came to ruin everyone’s good time.
This isn’t some unique textbook that only a handful of people read. This kind of material is being taught in home schools and Christian schools across the nation. Southern textbooks have long tried to gloss over slavery and the Civil War. So when it comes to civil discussions, its no wonder they get nowhere because opposing sides can’t agree on the most basic of facts. There is a belief permeating the right wing that facts are a matter of perspective, and it’s to the detriment of our nation that youth is being molded into citizens who have no grasp on reality.
