TMZ, the online tabloid whose early work rarely spanned beyond gossip about celebrities, produced an actual snippet of news on Thursday when they came across Roger Stone in an airport baggage claim. Stone has been a close friend and confidante to Donald Trump for decades. He stood for an interview with the pro-Trump media giant, who have adjusted their reporting style in the Trump era.
Asked if he thought there was any chance Trump would be impeached, the 64-year-old Republican wonk (and favorite of the Alt-Right) became immediately animated:
People who are calling for impeachment are the people who didn’t vote for him. They need to get over it. They lost … Sorry, he whipped her ass.”
Stone’s view, of course, doesn’t account for the fact that Trump’s victory only came from the electoral college, after having been voted for by millions of people fewer than his opponent in the general election. Hardly an “ass whipping,” but one understands that Stone is committed to his narrative. Gesticulating wildly with his hands, Stone went on to warn what would happen if anyone tried to impeach the president he clearly hasn’t seen any recent approval ratings for:
Just try it. You will have a spasm of violence in this country, an insurrection like you’ve never seen … Both sides are heavily armed, my friend … This is not 1974. The people will not stand for impeachment.”
Okay, Roger. But what about if, like any impeachment that’s ever happened in America, it was actually voted on by Congress, and “the people” have no say in the matter?
A politician who votes for it would be endangering their own life … I’m not advocating violence, but I’m predicting it.”
Just to get him on the record, TMZ’s resident Aussie reporter, Charlie Cotton, went one step further:
Cotton: So you’re predicting that if he got impeached, there’d by some sort of civil war-type…
Stone: Yes, I do, that’s what I think will happen.”
So despite the fact that less than half the country voted for Trump, and fewer people approve of Trump than want to see him impeached, Trump’s buddy Roger thinks it will once again be brother against brother. A civil war over the impeachment of the worst president in American history.
