It’s no secret that Donald Trump is furious with his own Attorney General, Jeff Sessions. Now, Sessions was a horrifying choice as Trump’s Attorney General nominee for a number of reasons, including racism, misogyny, and another number of troubling bigotries that are terrifying as the nation’s top law enforcement officer. However, we have a much more terrifying prospect for the potential replacement as Attorney General since Sessions is in Trump’s crosshairs. In fact, a MUCH more terrifying prospect: former New York City Mayor and America’s resident loon Rudy Giuliani. Apparently, this is an idea a frustrated Trump suggested inside the White House on Monday.
Giuliani had been politically irrelevant until he joined Team Trump. People had seen him as a foolish old man who had been overtaken by political extremism and possible senility. Now, though, thanks to Trump’s insane whims, demands for loyalty, and paranoia regarding the Russia investigation, Rudy Giuliani becoming America’s next Attorney General, should Jeff Sessions be pushed out, is a very real possibility. After all, right now, Trump needs a loyalist in that position who can stop Special Counsel Robert Mueller from digging too deep into Trump’s misdeeds, and Giuliani is nothing if not a Trump loyalist.
Now, since Trump took to Twitter Monday morning and attacked Sessions again, calling him, quote, “beleaguered,” it is more obvious than ever that there is an all out assault on Sessions’ future at the Department of Justice. Here is that tweet:
So why aren't the Committees and investigators, and of course our beleaguered A.G., looking into Crooked Hillarys crimes & Russia relations?
— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) July 24, 2017
With Sessions recused from the investigation into the Trump campaign’s possible collusion with Russia to fix the 2016 presidential election, and with Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein on record saying he would not fire Mueller without cause, Trump is backed into a corner and looking to take an extreme step to make sure whoever supervises Mueller gives him cover. Giuliani is the perfect choice for that.
Make no mistake – no matter how much the GOP-controlled House and Senate say that they want impartiality and a transparent investigation, they’d confirm Giuliani in a heartbeat. They want Trump protected, because that is what protects them. They know Giuliani would never let Mueller do anything to bring Trump down; in fact, if Trump so much as sneezed in the direction of wanting Mueller gone, Giuliani would do it without question.
Obviously, this old Trumpkin is the last person who should be Attorney General, but in the world we live in, it could most definitely happen.
