On Friday, Donald Trump spent several minutes clarifying his position on a topic that politicians generally agree upon: babies.
Tuesday was a difficult day for Donald Trump. There are many reasons for this, but the most notable was perhaps his attack on a crying baby in the audience at a Virginia rally. Trump should be used to being surrounded by wailing children — after all, he spends much of his time preaching his hateful doctrine to thousands of them at once — but despite the roaring crowd of bigots and the nails-on-chalkboard-caliber sound of his own voice over the sound system, Trump decided that the baby was bothering him.
“Don’t worry about that baby, I love babies,” Trump told the child’s mother sarcastically. “I love babies. I hear that baby crying. I like it. I like it. What a beautiful baby. The mom’s running around like ‘don’t worry about it.’ It’s young and beautiful and healthy and that’s what we want.” But very shortly after, he reversed his words:
Actually I was only kidding, you can get the baby out of here. That’s all right. Don’t worry. I think she really believed me that I love having a baby crying while I’m speaking. That’s ok, people don’t understand. That’s OK.
“Kissing babies” is typically associated with politicians in general, but Trump somehow managed to screw that up.
“I don’t throw babies out, believe me,” Trump said Friday. “I love my babies. I love my children. I love babies. I don’t throw babies out, believe me.”
“I’m trying to speak in front of thousands — we had thousands of people in the room — and I said all right, keep the baby, don’t worry about it. Then after about two minutes, I said I’m going to counteract my order. If you take that baby outside, it’s not so bad,” the GOP nominee, an actual adult human, explained.
Trump says that “the whole place laughed” as he abused the baby and his mother. While this is largely true, one must wonder why he uses the crowd laughing at the attack as an explanation of why it is OK. It just means his followers are horrible people.
Trump is the only politician in recent memory who has had to spend almost a week attempting to soften his stance on babies. Think about that.
