Plenty of people in the US were amazed by Donald Trump’s paper-thin margin of victory last week; apparently Trump himself was one of them. Sources (via NY Times) within his campaign “say that Mr. Trump … was shocked when he won the election.”
But once they start describing what the job actually entails I imagine it’ll take a concerted effort to keep him from handing Mike Pence the bible right then and there. Even in these early days Trump’s cadre of bizarre requests are being described by his aides as “coming to grips with the fact that his life is about to change radically.”
As much as 46% of past preidents have complained that they have trouble sleeping in their new home. This is especially likely to be the case for Mr. Trump who often returned home in his private jet after rallies all over the country. The plan – at least for now – is for our orange despote to spend every weekend back at home.
Because the last two presidencies have been plagued by the accusation that they take far too much vacation PolitiFact took the time to break down the numbers for us and we can use that to compare Mr. Trump to his predicessors. Even if Mr. Trump takes no other vacations (and I doubt that will be the case) he will spend less time in the White House than either Obama or Bush Jr.
In addition, Mr. Trump, who’s used to having his ‘me’ time, will never really be free for his entire presidency. Presidents must always be available for special meetings and occasional briefings on important matters. Yes Mr. Trump, even if it’s the weekend and even if you’re on vacation.
Though this is all going to be a very trying time for liberals and America in general, it’s likely going to be a very amusing time as well. Not that anyone would wish this on their worst of enemies. But since we’re here perhaps we should enjoy the scenary. America has just elected it’s first pampered man baby to the presidency.
Combine this with the fact that Trump has spent his entire campaign alienating the media (even Fox News) and we’re all in for a very interesting show. There is a reason that most presidents suck up to reporters. You may not believe this but if they all collectively don’t like you they really can slant the news. I think this too can be explained by the fact that Trump didn’t expect to win.
