On Sunday, Trump seized upon the latest opportunity to hit Hillary Clinton hard. Sure, it was the same meaningless place in which he has been hitting her for months, but he hopped on Twitter to deliver a brutal knockout blow to Clinton’s campaign that would leave the former First Lady in a position that she simply cannot win in November. Tweet-fingers at the ready, Trump typed the following phrase:
Lyin' Hillary Clinton told the FBI that she did not know the "C" markings on documents stood for CLASSIFIED. How can this be happening?
— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) September 4, 2016
Trump was, of course, referencing recently released documents from Clinton’s FBI interviews. In notes from the documents, the FBI wrote that Clinton was unaware that (C) was used to note that an email was confidential.
Yes, that’s right – in his bumbling attempt to accuse Clinton of lying, he demonstrated that it might — just might — be possible to misinterpret such an ambiguous marking in an email. You see, even with widespread media coverage and numerous sources clearly explaining that “(C)” means confidential, even with this being one of the most heavily reported factoids in conservative media over the last several days, even with the power of Google at his fingertips, Trump still failed to grasp the meaning of the marking.
One can understand how someone might not grasp the specific meaning of a c-in-parentheses, but when a presidential candidate — with nigh-infinite information on the topic right in front of him, no less — is unable to figure out the meaning, one must ask:
