This weekend, Donald Trump raised the specter, yet again — the election might be rigged against him. This meme is tactically brilliant, because it creates a “heads I win, tails you lose” situation, and while anyone with even a modicum of critical thinking ability can see through it, Trump’s ardent supporters aren’t known for their critical thinking and are known for their love of conspiracy theories.
Sociologically, it’s a disastrously stupid decision for precisely those same reasons. And Trump’s supporters are more than happy to demonstrate why.
Now, those who’ve been watching the voter ID scandals around this country know that if the election is rigged in favor of anyone, it’s Trump. But Trump’s fan base can’t handle the thought of losing, and neither can their Godking, so more than a few of his supporters have announced that they’re going to go to the local voting precincts to look for illegal immigrants.
“Trump said to watch you precincts. I’m going to go, for sure,” said Steve Webb, a 61-year-old carpenter from Fairfield, Ohio.“I’ll look for … well, it’s called racial profiling. Mexicans. Syrians. People who can’t speak American,” he said. “I’m going to go right up behind them. I’ll do everything legally. I want to see if they are accountable. I’m not going to do anything illegal. I’m going to make them a little bit nervous.”
“People who don’t speak American.” Christ Almighty these people are f*cking stupid. This is the sort of stuff you say to make fun of tools like Webb.
If you think this will end poorly, that’s because you’re paying attention. Here are these clowns who have no idea what the hell to look for, zeroing in on minority populations. Maybe they should just save us all the hassle and hand out brownshirts before they go. It’s thematically appropriate as well as a red flag telling cops who needs to be removed from the premises to prevent fights.
This is classic voter intimidation. It’s pulled right from the NSDAP playbook.
See, they’ve heard rumors — rumors that the Democrats will load up buses of minorities and take them to vote several times in different areas of the city. They’ve heard rumors that Clinton votes are already waiting — boxes of them.
The rumors are bullshit, but that doesn’t stop these memes from spreading like psychosocial cancer anyway.
And if Trump loses? Well, some of them are advocating for open rebellion and assassination:
“If she’s in office, I hope we can start a coup. She should be in prison or shot. That’s how I feel about it,” Dan Bowman, a 50-year-old contractor, said of Hillary Clinton, the Democratic nominee. “We’re going to have a revolution and take them out of office if that’s what it takes. There’s going to be a lot of bloodshed. But that’s what it’s going to take… . I would do whatever I can for my country.”
Except for sitting down, shutting up, and realizing that your country doesn’t want your reckless and destructive messiah. These people are no more American than Osama Bin Laden, and they’re working towards the same purposes: undermining the election and the faith in democracy.
Part of a democracy is having faith in the outcomes. A democracy cannot function if you don’t accept defeat, and Trump’s supporters aren’t interested in that:
“We’re going to have a lot of election fraud,” said Jeannine Bell Smith, 65. “They are having illegals vote. In some states, you don’t need voter registration to vote.”
“We can’t have that lying bitch in the White House,” she told a reporter after the rally’s opening prayer and singing of the national anthem.
“All I know is our country is not going to be a country anymore,” said Judy Wright, who traveled from Indiana to attend the Ohio rally. “I’ve heard people talk about a revolution. I’ve heard people talk about separation of states. I don’t even like to think about it. But I don’t think this movement is going away. We don’t have a voice anymore, and Donald Trump is giving us a voice.”
There will likely be violence on election night. Make no mistake. There may be shootings, and I’m fairly certain there are going to be brawls. And there’s going to be violence after it, too. Furthermore, Trump’s run has paved the way for the next wannabe tyrant, and if they’re even marginally competent, they’ll likely win.
Democracy doesn’t die from the outside. It dies from the inside, and even if Clinton wins and we barely pull through, our system will still be on life support. If Trump wins, well . . . maybe humanity was just destined for nuclear hellfire. It’s depressing that this is the best sapient life can do, but hey, if our last act was an answer to the Fermi paradox, then it was worth something, right?
