In a commencement speech to the Coast Guard Academy Wednesday morning, Donald Trump went on offense, as usual. It’s become routine for President Pants-on-Fire to use every opportunity in front of a microphone to rip into his critics, no matter how inappropriate the venue, and the graduation ceremony was no different.
In front of a crowd of almost 200 cadets, Trump spoke for half an hour about “never, ever, ever, EVER giving up,” peppering his speech with self-congratulations and his laments about the “unfair” treatment of the media. The Media™, of course, is anyone who writes, says, or airs anything Trump doesn’t like, especially if it’s a verbatim quote from the president himself. Trump’s current woes stem from the fact that NBC News exists, and transmitted footage of him admitting to obstruction of justice: “[W]hen I decided to just [fire James Comey] I said to myself, I said, ‘You know, this Russia thing with Trump and Russia is a made–up story.'”
So what did he whine about to the graduates of the USCGA? The very service members who could patrol the waters around Mar-a-Lago? All the emphasis is mine:
Over the course of your life, you will find that things are not always fair. You will find that things happen to you that you do not deserve and that are not always warranted…Look at the way I’ve been treated lately, especially by the media. No politician in history, and I say this with great surety, has been treated worse or more unfairly.
Imagine if Barack Obama had used a military graduation — a gathering of young men and women who have decided to potentially give their lives for the country — to whine about the media accurately reporting the actual words that came out of his mouth. Republicans would be apoplectic! But this is what passes for normal with Donald Trump. Thus far, very few Republicans have been courageous enough to call out any of his ridiculous and potentially criminal behavior.
