Anyone in their right mind would agree that Donald Trump is the last person who should be trusted in a position of power — much less with the nuclear codes. Time and time again, Trump has proven that he cannot regulate his emotions and has zero impulse control. From the moment Trump’s presidency began, it became clear that unless Trump’s White House found a way to control him, the country is doomed.
As Trump grows more erratic and irrational as the days go by, members of Trump’s administration have found themselves having to defy the president and his irresponsible requests. The Washington Post has just reported an instance where Trump was defied by his own Defense Secretary, Jim Mattis, for making a shocking request last year.
The Post reported on Wednesday that last May, Trump personally requested that Mattis create a plan for sinking Iranian ships because he felt Iran might increase their military aggression. The Post reported:
One tense moment came last May as officials grew increasingly concerned about aggressive Iranian behavior.
For weeks, Mattis had been resisting requests from the White House to provide military options for Iran. Now Trump made clear that he wanted the Pentagon to deliver a range of plans that included striking Iranian ballistic missile factories or hitting Iranian speedboats that routinely harassed U.S. Navy vessels.
‘Why can’t we sink them?’ Trump would sometimes ask about the boats.”
U.S. officials relayed to the Post that when Mattis was told of Trump’s request by National Security advisor H.R. McMaster during a conference call, he flat-out denied Trump. U.S. officials said, “the defense secretary refused.” The Post wrote:
At that point, McMaster took Mattis off speakerphone, cleared his staff from the room and continued the conversation.”
Once again, Trump’s unprecedented impulsiveness must be constantly checked by his staff. This is a man who has posed a danger to this country (and the world) every single day of his presidency. Trump cannot handle this kind of responsibility — and Mattis’ response proves it.
