The destruction this country is about to suffer just gets easier and easier to predict.
As a writer, normally I enjoy making predictions. With the new year upon us, it would be nice to write something positive for a change and give myself, and everyone else, something to look forward to after such a devastating 2016. But, alas, this is far from positive. In fact, it’s pretty dire because it’s becoming more and more evident that Trump’s administration is not only full of racists but one, in particular, seems to think that there’s nothing wrong with slavery. Guess which cabinet position this guy will hold? That’s right: Labor Secretary.
The U.S. Department of Labor is a department that most Americans expect will protect their rights in the workforce, but Trump’s new Labor Secretary, Andrew Puzder, who is CEO of a company that owns a bunch of fast food chains, is an ardent opponent of raising the minimum wage, and he’s also against workers taking their mandatory breaks and won’t open new restaurants in California because they make him pay overtime wages.
OC Weekly reports:
Trump’s labor man also had choice words for Carl’s Jr.’s home state. “I think the big change in California, it’s really become a kind of socialist state,” Puzder opined. “You can’t be a capitalist in this state, and Carl was at heart a capitalist who created a company that to this day bears his initials.” The would-be Labor Secretary complained about regulations and overtime laws, claiming workers are overprotected.
“Have you ever been to a fast food restaurant and the employees are sitting and you’re wondering, ‘Why are they sitting?'” Puzder asked. “They are on what is called a mandatory break [emphasis his].” He shared a laugh with the interviewer, saying the so-called nanny state is why Carl’s Jr. doesn’t open up any new restaurants in California anymore.
So why would Trump pick a man like Puzder, who clearly has no respect for his own employees’ rights, for a position that’s supposed to be held by a person who will do just that? The answer is pretty simple. MONEY.
Puzder is an establishment Republican, was a top donor to the Republican campaign, and has been for many years.
According to a recent Mother Jones article:
Puzder served as an economic adviser and spokesman for Mitt Romney’s 2012 presidential campaign, and as a delegate to the 2012 Republican National Convention and as chairman of the Platform Committee’s Sub-Committee on the Economy, Job Creation, and the Debt.
In late 2014, as the 2016 presidential race was about to heat up, Puzder listed his top three choices for the Republican nomination: Romney, former Texas Gov. Rick Perry (now Trump’s choice to lead the Department of Energy), and former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush. That same year, Puzder and then-Gov.Perry even appeared together at a Carl’s Jr. event in Austin, to roll out the burger chain’s “Texas BBQ Thickburger” and raise funds for a veterans’ charity, along with Sports Illustrated swimsuit model Hannah Ferguson. Puzder declared Perry “America’s best governor.”
Perry was America’s best governor? The man sounds as deluded at Trump. And now, it looks like both Puzder and Perry will be part of the new administration.
When it’s time for Congress to give the final approval to Trump’s picks, let’s hope they have the good sense to give Puzder (and the others) the boot!
