Republicans have been holding tight to the tragedy that took place in Benghazi, Libya nearly four years ago as a political ploy to prevent Hillary Clinton from winning a presidential bid. For years they have made a terror attack into political fodder while parading mourning parents around for their political gain. And, they aren’t finished.
NPR reports that the parents of Sean Smith, a U.S. Foreign Service officer, and Tyrone Woods, a Navy SEAL, have filed a wrongful death lawsuit against Hillary Clinton. They are being represented by attorney Larry Klayman, who NPR notes “has pursued Hillary and Bill Clinton for years.”
While Pat Smith spoke at the Republican National Convention she said:
I blame Hillary Clinton personally for the death of my son.
This newest legal battle surrounding Benghazi should come as little to no surprise. Benghazi is the dead horse that the Republicans just can’t stop beating.
Following the horrible attack on our country on September 11, 2001, which killed more than 3,000 people, Congress held a total of 22 hearings. Since Benghazi, there have been 21 hearings. Out of those 21 hearings, there wasn’t enough evidence to bring up any charges against Hillary Clinton – and this is even with a very blatantly partisan investigation. They were hell-bent on finding fault in Hillary Clinton, yet they couldn’t convict her of anything.
That’s because this investigation has been focused on only one thing –
searching for fabricating anything that might tarnish Clinton’s run for the presidency.
This newest pitchfork added to the witch hunt is just more of the same. NPR points out that “under a law known as the Westfall Act, the government can substitute itself as a defendant for the federal official being sued.”
Which means that charges brought up against Hillary Clinton, personally, like these two families have done, are likely to go absolutely nowhere – just like the charges brought up against Donald Rumsfeld for claims of mistreatment of detainees from Iraq and Afghanistan.
So why even attempt a lawsuit that will go nowhere?
Because that is what Larry Layman has done for years.
The Southern Poverty Law Center lists him as an “Extremist” with an “Antigovernment Movement” ideology. They describe him as a “pathologically litigious attorney and professional gadfly notorious for suing everyone from Iran’s Supreme Leader to his own mother.”
He also has a beef against the Clintons for which he made President Bill Clinton, then First Lady Hillary Clinton and other officials of the administration a target of at least 18 lawsuits during Bill Clinton’s presidency, which produced little to nothing.
So yes, this is just more of the same unsubstantiated anti-Clinton rhetoric for which we’ve come to expect from the right-wing. The Benghazi political machine trudges on.
