A Florida man is facing battery charges after he allegedly beat up a Hispanic man, punching him in the back of the head. What reason did the attacker give for this vicious assault? “Donald Trump.” Because of course he did it for Trump.
According to the police report, Pablo Echevarria was cleaning the parking lot at a Gate Food Post store in Gainesville on Nov. 10. Shortly after 1 a.m., Caleb Joseph Illig showed up and started punching Echevarria in the back of the head. Illig shouted “Let’s Trump down” while attacking his unsuspecting victim. Echevarria said he asked the assailant why he was assaulting him.
This is for Donald Trump,” Illig replied.
Echevarria said he didn’t fight back against his attacker and instead tried to use “evasive movements.” Finally, another employee stepped in to stop the assault and Illig fled the scene.
Police said that footage from security cameras in the area “clearly shows [Illig] striking [Echevarria] in the back of the head, and completely corroborates the [victim] and [witness’] accounts of the incident.”
When authorities finally caught up with Illig on Nov. 20, he claimed that he had “no recollection of the incident whatsoever.” His story is that the incident must have been the result of booze and bipolar disorder. He has since been charged with simple battery.
Officer Ben Tobias noted that since the election, the number of racial attacks like this has gone through the roof, and Gainesville is no exception.
Just looking at election results, the community is divided almost 50/50,” Tobias said. “It’s not just here in Gainesville. I’d like to think we’re doing better, but we’re having our own problems crop up.”
“It’s easy to say, but folks can’t just go around being scared to be a victim of a crime,” the officer added. “If they think they’re being targeted, definitely contact us.”
Hate crimes have ramped up following Donald Trump’s win. Hundreds of attacks have taken place in the weeks after the election and they show no sign of slowing down anytime soon, especially since Trump himself can’t even be bothered to denounce the racial violence that is gripping the nation.
