Hasan Minhaj joked that he was asked not to roast Donald Trump on Saturday night. Thankfully, he did anyway.
While Trump held an embarrassing rally to whine about journalists and divide this country even more, Minhaj did his job perfectly by honoring free speech and telling the best jokes he could deliver.
Some jokes did not land well, but most of the jokes about Trump were hilarious.
As we all know, Trump declared that he would not be attending the White House Correspondents’ Dinner, becoming the first president to skip the event by choice. Ronald Reagan only missed the event because he was nearly assassinated.
Trump has frequently referred to news organizations as “fake news” and the “enemy” of the people, and that’s because he doesn’t like them telling the truth about him. So he acted like a big baby and refused to attend.
To kick off the event, WHCA President Jeff Mason spoke about the importance of a free press and directly addressed Trump’s attacks on the media and his refusal to attend the dinner.
The values that underpin this dinner have not changed. In fact I think they’ve been reinforced. We are here to celebrate good journalism. We are here to celebrate the press, not the presidency…We cannot ignore the rhetoric that has been employed by the president about who we are and about what we do. Seeking to delegitimatize journalism is dangerous to a healthy republic. We are not ‘fake news,’ we are not ‘failing news organizations,’ and we are not the enemy of the American people.”
With that being said, Minhaj was invited to begin the roasting and Trump was the top punchline.
“We’ve got to address the elephant that’s not in the room,” Minhaj said. “The leader of our country is not here. And that’s because he lives in Moscow. As for the other guy, I think he’s in Pennsylvania because he can’t take a joke.”
Indeed, Trump is so thin-skinned that he often attacks Saturday Night Live for mocking him.
Minhaj mocked Trump a lot during the dinner.
Among the highlights, Minhaj referenced Trump’s frequent golf outings:
Every time Trump goes golfing, the headline should read, ‘Trump golfing. Apocalypse delayed. Take the W.'”
Trump’s bombing of Afghanistan and the fact that Trump is not funny:
Historically, the president usually performs at the correspondents’ dinner, but I think I speak for all of us when I say he’s done far too much bombing this month.”
Trump’s error in thinking that Frederick Douglass is still alive:
Frederick Douglass isn’t here, and that’s because he’s dead. Someone please tell the President!”
Minhaj also pointed out that Trump is totally sober when he throws Twitter tantrums and whines during interviews because he doesn’t drink.
He also proceeded to torch every administration officials who also chose not to attend.
In the end, Minhaj praised the First Amendment and slammed Trump for assaulting it.
Only in America can a first-generation, Indian-American, Muslim kid get on this stage and make fun of the president, ‘the orange man behind the Muslim ban.’ Even the president is not beyond the reach of the First Amendment. The president didn’t show up because Donald Trump doesn’t care about free speech. The man who tweets everything that enters his head refuses to back the amendment that allows him to do it. I’m proud that all of us are here tonight to defend that right, even if the man in the White House never would.”

Donald Trump should have attended the dinner. He could have shown the world that he can take a joke and he would have gotten the chance to take shots at the media through jokes of his own. But he chose to hold a divisive rally instead and proved how petty he is.
