The Democratic National Convention was filled with powerful words and emotional moments. One of those was when the father of a slain Muslim-American soldier took the stage.
Khizr Khan is the father of Humayun S. M. Khan, who is one of 14 Muslims who have died fighting in the United States military since 9/11. Humayun was serving in Iraq when he was killed by a car bomb. His last action was to tell his fellow soldiers to stay back while he went to take a closer look at the vehicle that had the bomb.
Khan spoke passionately, but softly, and slammed Donald Trump for his bigotry towards Muslims.
Donald Trump consistently smears the character of Muslims. He disrespects other minorities, women, judges, even his own party leadership. He vows to build walls and ban us from this country.
As Khan continued, he proceeded to b*tchslap the bigoted billionaire right in the face with the Constitution. Khan asked Trump if he had ever even bothered to read the United States Constitution, then whipped out his own copy from his pocket and told the Republican nominee that he was welcome to borrow it.
Donald Trump, you are asking Americans to trust you with their future. Let me ask you: Have you even read the United States Constitution? I will gladly lend you my copy. In this document, look for the words ‘liberty’ and ‘equal protection of law.’
Have you ever been to Arlington Cemetery? Go look at the graves of brave patriots who died defending the United States of America — you will see all faiths, genders, and ethnicities.
Khan told Tump that he had “sacrificed nothing and no one.” “We cannot solve our problems by building walls and sowing division,” he said. “We are stronger together.”
The grieving father then spoke directly to his fellow immigrants, urging them to vote against the hatemongering billionaire.
In conclusion, I ask every patriot American, all Muslim immigrants, and all immigrants to not take this election lightly. This is a historic election and I request to honor the sacrifice of my son. And on election day, take the time t get out and vote and vote for the healer. Vote the strongest, most qualified candidate: Hilary Clinton. Not the divider.
According to Nate Goldman of WIRED, Khan’s plea was effective, as searches for “register to vote” spiked immediately after he spoke.
