Polls have been clear on one thing for several months: Donald Trump is very unpopular with women. A new PPP poll released on June 30 shows that women favor Hillary Clinton by 51-36 percent. That’s a problem that the presumptive GOP nominee needs to do something about, because women tend to vote in higher numbers than men. But if Trump’s interview with Bill O’Reilly on June 29 is any indication, he has no plans to address the situation. In fact, he seems to be absolutely clueless about how to make a pitch for the female vote.
O’Reilly opens the segment by highlighting recent national polls that show Clinton beating Trump, but only by an amount within the margin of error, making it a statistical tie. He follows that with a clip of Hillary speaking in Los Angeles, where she told her audience that she is “very sympathetic” to Trump voters who are upset because they have lost good jobs, or are angry over immigration or trade deals. But, she said,
I’m not sympathetic to the xenophobia, to the misogyny, the homophobia, the Islamophobia, and all of the other dog-whistles Trump uses to create that fervor among a lot of his supporters.
After the clip plays, O’Reilly gives Trump the floor, and he immediately says that “no one knows what she is talking about.” Even if Trump doesn’t know, a lot of other people certainly do. The racism and xenophobia of his campaign is one reason his numbers are so spectacularly under water with Hispanics and African-Americans.
Next O’Reilly highlights the huge difference in support for Trump among men and women. “It would seem that you’re going to have to tailor your message a little bit more to women voters. Are you willing to do that?” Bill-o asks.
Trump’s response is that of a delusional person.
I think I’m doing great with women. Today I’m in Maine and we have a sold out arena — the place is packed. And yesterday in Ohio, and in Pennsylvania and in West Virginia it’s packed, with lines going outside. It’s incredible. And half of these people — I mean more than half it seems — are women. They have signs up ‘Women For Trump.’
O’Reilly explains to Trump that of course there would be women at his rallies, because he does have some support among them. “Thirty-two percent of women support you, and they’re the ones with the signs,” he says with a laugh.
After that exchange the host gives Trump another chance to send a message to women that would make him and his campaign more appealing to them. O’Reilly points out that usually politicians aim certain messages at certain groups, and he says that if Trump is going to tailor a message to women, he would like to know what the message is.
If you weren’t sure until now why Trump is struggling so badly with women, his response should make that clear. The man has absolutely no idea of the things that women care about. This is what he tells O’Reilly his message to women is:
It’s strength, it’s borders, it’s a strong military. We are going to protect our country. It’s keeping people that want to kill us out of our country… It’s not letting the people from the migration — the Syrians, or whoever they are, because we have no idea who they are… And Obama and Clinton are letting them come into our country by the thousands.
It is obvious that Donald Trump is a one trick pony who has no idea of how to talk to various groups of voters. So with any luck he will go down to a humiliating defeat when members of those groups who aren’t interested in his message of power and isolationism turn out in droves to vote against him.
