Over the weekend, Facebook was treated to one of our favorite pastimes: Trolling people who desperately need trolling. And I don’t think I’ve seen a politician who doesn’t live in DC who deserves it more than “anti-everything that’s not white, male, and Christian” Texas Governor Greg Abbott.
Abbott is the darling of the Christian Right and successor to notable luminaries like George “I know how hard it is to put food on your family” Bush and Rick “Oops” Perry. As you might expect from Texas, he is extremely conservative when it comes to social issues. And Abbott is definitely not shy about how proudly he opposes gay, trans, brown, and breasted individuals.
So when Ashley Smith, a trans woman and an LGBTQ+ activist found out that Abbott was giving a speech announcing his candidacy for a second term, she knew her moment in the spotlight had come:
Smith got the governor to pose with her for a smiling, candid photo. And, as anyone with even an ounce of common sense will tell you, the governor had no idea he was posing with a trans woman.
That’s not some jokey part of the gag — that’s the whole point of this staged photo. It wasn’t to get Greg Abbott to be grossed out later when he realized what had happened. She didn’t give him rabbit ears in the photo. She didn’t even mock that cruel man in her caption. It was to prove that all of these assholes who want to patrol bathrooms and keep out all of the dangerous perverts have literally no idea what they’re even looking for.
How will the Potty Police know I’m transgender if the Governor doesn’t?”
Texas has long been embroiled in a debate about whether to restrict bathroom usage to genders that match what’s declared on one’s birth certificate. But proponents of the so-called “Bathroom Bill” have yet to turn up evidence of any instances of the scary things they think will happen ever having happened. In fact, the bad things that are happening in Texas regarding bathrooms are happening to transgender people, not to those that would restrict them. Violence has increased, intolerance is rampant, and do I need to repeat that they’re considering a freaking law regulating which bathrooms they can use?
Let’s hope this viral photo puts transgender identity in some perspective for those that would shove them back in the closet: How will you know who to shove?
